Johnny Cash was, and still is, The Man (in black or otherwise).  Johnny Cash made Music, not country, not rockabilly, not folk, just Music.

I love Luther Perkins's playing on the early stuff.

JC,  always loved his music, the honesty and the emptiness in it ... never cluttered ... many people hear different things in his songs, to me I hear a lot of blues ... may not be 12 bar, but blues it what I hear

My Dad used to be a huge Cash-Fan (though he doesn't understand
a word of English, he was just into the image, I suppose), so  I grew up
with the man's music as a kid.

I never really got into the Amerian recordings, though.

"Live At Folsom Prisom" is one of my all-time faves.
Isn't that middle-finger pic from that show?

yeah, IIRC Jim Marshall was taking photos at the gig, and said to Cash "Have you got a message for the Governor?" and he did that!

I have Live at Folsom on vinyl and it is definitely one of my favorites. I like most of the later stuff he did with Rick Rubin too. I especially love the cover he did of Hank William's I'm so Lonesome with Nick Cave.
