Alternative to blade switch for Marrguar?

Post by JONFROMJERSEY » Sun Jun 16, 2019 8:50 pm

Hey, what alternatives do I have in terms of changing out the 4-way blade switch on my Marrguar for something else? I want to preserve pickup selection options but I don´t really like the blade switch so much. It sticks up too high and also gets loose after a while, even when I replace it with high quality switches. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

I've never actually tried one (yet!), but the Freeway Switch is pretty cool. I'd imagine that you could just leave 2 of the options blank, or you could come up with something else to wire in those spots...

From left field .. but you could also consider moving it to the top plate, and move the two bright switches to the bottom plate. Faction would probably make you a slotted top plate.

Or, if you lengthened the slot you could shim it underneath to lower the switch a tad, and/or cut a bit off the end (replace with strat switch tip ?).

Your options are basically traditional Jag switches, a rotary switch, individual mini-toggles, routing and shimming to shorten the blade of the existing switch, or using a JM/LP switch with a mini toggle or push pull for the series option.

Shimming the switch probably won't work on a 4-way blade--it needs the full slot length to travel correctly to position 1 and 4. It would probably work on a 3-position blade, and I'm about to try it for the same reason (a little tall).

I'd go with a Cobain plate, 3 way toggle and a slide switch for series. The 'freeway' thing seems delicate, as in easy to bump into some wacky position. I also used a Strat switch tip on my Jag blade switch--it helps. An old Tele trick is to bend the blade tip as well, which lowers the profile, and if you crimp the end, it will help keep your switch tip on.

Try putting a Strat switch tip on it first. You might be surprised by how well that works.

Looks like even shimming a 3 position blade switch will only get so much clearance. Strat tip for the win though. I knew Strats were good for something :P

There's a wiring set up for the traditional three switch jaguar plate for series when both pickups are "off"

Thanks guys. So many options. I already use a strat tip but it is not enough... I will investigate.

What if you set the switch plate a little deeper into the body? You could inset it the thickness of the plate itself and that little bit might make a world of difference for you.

Do you mean chisel/rout out a little wood? I would ruin it...

I have thought about a 4 position slider switch and custom plate in the past but I was hesitant.

What about getting a standard diamond plate and just changing it over to standard Jaguar 2-position (or 3-position) sliders?

Ah I see there is such a mod. I never knew that. I do kind of like the idea of one switch though.
