New Mustang Day! (w/ Jaguar trem)

Post by triviani » Wed Jun 12, 2019 7:11 pm

Got this today :) and thought you’d like to see it.

Image

As far as I know it was made, or put together, by a local small-act luthier several years ago. I like the color, blocks neck and the Jaguar trem, and it has a funky bridge that may put the strings a little too high. I need to take a look to the circuit as well, because it makes weird static noises.

But so far so good, specially for how inexpensive it was!

Nice!

If the bridge sits too high to get the action down where you want it, all you need is a shim. That's not hard to fix at all.

Thanks for the shim tip, I’ll look into it.

I've seen that bridge out in the wild from afar, it's a roller, right?

I'd think the finger-like projections would feel weird against my palm but nothing you can't get used to.

Love the blocks!

The body seems a lot like the Jay Turser MG... I had one, same pickguard, same bridge and tremolo... maybe they got one and put a new neck on it.

Looks great!

The Turser MGs are 24.75" scale right? I've never heard from anyone whether those necks can be swapped out with 24" or 25.5" Fender necks (i.e. if it's a conversion 24.75" neck vs its own thing).

Wow, you are right! It has that same bridge, and really looks the same.

I didn't measure mine at the time, but a couple websites at the time said it was 24", however they mess up the specs all the time with these obscure chinese guitars.

Wow, I love that!

Maybe an idea for a build...

- 70's Musicmaster neck
- Allparts Mustang Body (Natural) - route for minihumbuckers
- Mustang Pickguard, black, cut for minihums
- Jaguar trem
- mustang bridge
- Witchhats
- 3 way switch

Perfect!

Looks like a Mosrite style bridge.

I had the Harley Benton JM-vibrato'ed Mustang which is essentially the same as the Turser MG-2 (but with a different bridge and headstock, probably still built in the same factory) and it was definitely 24".

It´s a Hallmark Guitars bridge.

I’m put off by the neck but only because it’s so uncharacteristically Fender and that’s not even something I would have realized five years or so back. I had an MIJ Jaguar Special that I put some of those block inlay stickers on and it wasn’t until I already traded it away that I realized how little sense that made. At this point in time I’m put off by block inlays sans binding from any company just because it looks inherently wrong to my eyes.

None of that matters at all though - this guitar is awesome and if you got a deal on it that’s more important than an internet stranger picking on the lack of binding. It’s always awesome to see a NGD post where the poster is really excited.

I’ve never messed with one of those Mosrite kinda bridges. I’ve thought about how they’d be a competent replacement for the typically replaced standard offset bridge but I’ve never been in a position to get one and figure a way to mod the posts to make it work or whatever it’s take to do that. They look fine though? Like an even better Mustang bridge just because while the Mustang saddle is single groove instead of basically being 30 screw threads, it’s a pretty shallow groove. The Mosrite saddles are a lot deeper. I’m honestly surprised we don’t really see that ever because it seems like it’d be great.

Do you have any modding plans or ideas yet? I would do so many stupid things with this thing if I got a good deal on something like it. Some active pickup behind the bridge, take (I piece of?) a P Bass pickup and shove under the bottom 2/3 strings right behind the neck pickup/Jag pickup in the bridge, lipstick in the neck, gold foil horizontally under the 123 strings to counter the bass thing for the lower strings/figure out a way to have a switchable 3rd bridge somewhere maybe using a method like the Fender Mute? I’ve been messing around with clothespins and spare trem arms and broken windchime pieces and there are so many awesome sounds you can get just by shoving something like that between the strings and the guard/a pickup/frets in random spots.

Shit, I need to start actually doing stuff like this.

Thanks for the comments.

Spend some time fixing and cleaning it yesterday night, and put a set of 10-52 on it. Adjusted the truss rod and took a look to the circuit as well.

The pickups and circuit look cheap, but they don’t sound bad at all, if anything, the bridge pickup is a tad weak compared to the neck. I used some contact cleaner for the switches and it looks like it solved the noise issue.

I like the bridge, it feels solid, although it’s a tad tall. The guitar still needs some adjustments, has a bit of buzz near the 12h fret. The scale is definitively 24”, and the neck seems to fit just fine. It’s a nice body for mods and projects, if you find one.

Going to try some color matching today. ;D
