I've been enjoying this EQD series quite a lot.
Me too. I was originally a bit put off (more in a funny or joking way) by the title, and am surprised they did that with all the crap going on in the world right now. Though, maybe that was exactly the intentional point ;D EQD do seem to have a great sense of humor.

The last time I was young was when years started with 199* or 200*. So... yes, I'm probably just getting old.
same...RIP my youth
Yep. I jokingly give up with my kids when they're ribbing me and reply with "I'm from the 1900s, WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM MEEEE?!?!?"
:D
everytime i make a reference or a joke i realize i'm old as fuck and my kid will never get me. I've been actively trying to keep up but NAH. He'll come around to being a dork like me eventually

I'm not trying to keep up. I came to realize that I'm old and today's youth is as much about distinction from my generation as we were about distinction from our parent's generation.

Anyway, I remember the first time I heard about Albini was when I discovered the strange beauty of Nirvana's "In Utero" album. Which I found to be a lot better than "Nevermind" and still think so. It shows Cobain's abilities as a songwriter and the band is having so much more fun on this album, whereas Nevermind sounds like they are trying to produce Alternative Rock's "Sgt. Pepper's". In which Butch Vig succeeded, to be honest. It's just that I like the production on "In Utero" a lot more.

I watched this last night. I too was a bit surprised by how laid back he was. Mind you, I've always admired the guy. Especially Rapeman, Big Black, and Shellac :-* His knowledge of recording is amazing. It was really interesting seeing the inside of the studio and the way everything was set up.

I just finished watching it too. Really good stuff!
Super informative guy, pretty technical yet very down to earth.

I've always had a soft spot for Mr Albini, what with his approach to sound engineering & his output as a band member. Top bloke!

My kids have taken this to the next level and are slowly making me feel I don't belong in more 12inchy record shops which have been my fucking domain for most of my life, even though I do know what I'm doing. This follows on from them feeling I'm too old for Optimo and the like, which is just them not wanting me there when they are, which is fair enough because I'd not have wanted Old Man Shadowplay out with me but I'm not enjoying the mission creep and anyway they have moved their tanks into my fiefdom not the other way round.

I now enter and feel like every cunt's looking at me and wondering if I'm having an episode where I'm convinced I'm in the gents outfitters that was in the unit in the 70's and need help getting home or am just the oldest swinger in town and therefore need to be viewed with a mortifying blend of embarassment and pity. I mean I'm not that old and I look younger than I am but I'm still older than most of their customers.

I was in with two of mine the other week and asked about a few records and the little witches were cackling as the (non regular) counter guy gave me a smirk that according to my body language translation partners was the full; 'are you sure dad, wouldn't you be more comfortable with a red white and blue vinyl Paul Weller record from another shop?'.

The thing is...I don't really belong but it's hard admitting it and i've told them they can look forward to pushing me in a wheelchair because I'll never stop.

My kids are not really old enough to fully comprehend that their parents are getting older and more out-of-touch by the day. My wife is still fighting it and saying things like 'why haven't I heard of young actress x or hit movie y?' In my head I always answer "because you're getting older and you are no longer the target demographic!"

I am at peace with it. There is still plenty of cool stuff (for me) out there that I am enjoying-- in fact more than ever really, and I don't mind seceding whatever 'cultural relevance' and connections I had to the next generations. It's the way of the world. I work with a bunch of millennial types now; lo and behold they don't always know the pop culture touchstones that I have. As a middle-class American-born white guy I used to take so much of this trivial shit knowledge for granted (I could mention a movie or song and everyone would immediately get the reference), and I've changed my ways-- you have to know the room.

There is one thing that I worry about, which is the reality of age and time in relation to my abilities playing pickup soccer/football. But I figure if that gets too bad I can play in some over 40 and then an over 50 league or something.

I was in the „Altherren“-Team of my Tennis club when I was 32. And it was great! We are completely outside of all competition, playing just for fun.

If ever I'm stuck before a recording session I just watch albini interviews.

This one's killer, a bit more informative of technique than gear.

Last night I was reading through this thread and have to say that the disucssion on aging was brilliant... but this line really did hit home and cut deep. I am not sure to what extent I should love you for your insight, and to what extent I should hate you for your perfect description.

i apologize for that, once upon a time I had a day where I had time to reflect on this and it came together as seen above. Crypsterism was born

Aside from the music, for a long time everything I knew about Albini came from Our Band Could Be Your Life and one-liners about the Pixies sucking (though now I find myself agreeing with him, Kim > Black Francis by miles), I thought he was a misanthropic crank.

Was shocked over the last few years to find out that he's apparently a really nice guy overall.
