63 Jag headstock repair

Post by nonemoreblack » Fri Mar 21, 2008 2:18 pm

Hey, so after a couple of years of holding out and looking for a good deal on a pre-CBS sunburst jag I finally picked this one up off ebay for just under $1600 last week.  It's nicely worn and plays really great but with one major flaw, the chunk missing from the headstock.

Not a big deal though, after a trip to Home Depot I was all set.  Pre-CBS neck, meet jigsaw.

After cutting and shaping a new piece, sanding, staining, gluing, and clamping, here's how it turned out.  Not a perfect match, but I'm happy and it matches the worn look of the rest of the guitar.

Notice the mute 'shadow' on the guard.  This one's definitely seen a lot of sun over the years.

I kind of like the toggle switch, and never use the strangle switch anyway so I'll probably just leave it the way it is.

Nice work! From a few feet away, I probably wouldn't even notice. Looks like a nice price for it too. Congrats!

Nice work - yeah, you probably wouldn't notice it from a couple of feet away! It's a lovely guitar too.

I had the decal covered while i was prepping the headstock to avoid accidently scratching it.  But I decided to uncover it while I glued the new piece on so I could see how it would look.  So of course now that it's unprotected I accidently drip a huge glob of carpenters glue that ends up completely covering the jaguar lettering.  Luckily with a bit of soap and water it cleaned up fine and the decal was undamaged.

Nice job, nice Jag.  Cool to have a guitar you can play as hard as you want.

Nice work. That guitar has tons of character - a real looker. I've always thought that a nice worn look was the only way to make sunburst guitars look good.

I like the toggle... easier to switch btw. pickups. 8)  although, I'd buy an original switch setup too, and hold onto it. ;)

Are you going to restore the bridge and mute?  Does the trem. function well?

I :-* your jaguar.
