Welp, my shielding paint came today and it was a nice sunny day so I knocked it out and it dried really quickly. I decided I'd gotten as far as I wanted to take this particular project and dropped it off for my favorite tech to finish.

So, with any luck the next time y'all see this it will be a guitar.

So I contacted Sean and it sounds like the CNC engraved brass badge idea is back on. I'm tired of messing around with this and I want to get the damn guitar together.

Well, here it is!




7.8 pounds all told. Very cool and 3D- sounding. It's very loud acoustically.

Turns out the neck pocket is angled which results in the bridge being a bit higher than I'd like for pickup height reasons, but certainly workable. I'm going to work on dialing in the pickup heights later tonight.

The other thing I need to do is bend the trem arm a bit to get it closer to the body. The co-op bike shop I belong to has a huge vise which is great for this. Last time I did this I used a piece of bike inner tube to protect the end of the arm from getting marred by the jaws of the clamp.

Oh, and no need for a string tree. Can't say the behind the nut pitches are super tuneful or anything, but one less binding point and it could be fun for behind the nut bends/making noise.

Still working on the badge. That will happen eventually.

Yeah, the look sort of came together on its own. I definitely dig the space age/automotive paint look too, but once I found the brass pickups I knew it needed to go in a more rustic direction.

I'm not sure how much live use it will see. It has the best tuning stability and intonation of my JMs though which is probably more important than being able to use it as weapon in a live situation.

First time playing it in a band setting last night. I have to say it’s a mixed bag. In a two guitar band this would me my immediate go-to. It’s super hi-fi and alive sounding. Arpeggiated parts sound incredible. In my three piece though I generally prefer the more mid-forward and slightly fuzzier sound of my Rhoney.

This will be an awesome recording guitar but I may need a new musical situation to use it live.

That's the thing with a lot of those 'coil-around-a-bar-magnet' pickups. The mids can get VERY scooped and will sound great on their own or with a different guitar (sound engineers actually love them in a two-guitar environment - a lot less fiddling with EQs to do), but they can lack the meat you need in a trio. The same happens with gold foils.

However, this is one sweet sounding guitar you got yourself here Judging by your avatar I guess you're not adverse to Television-type music, I could absolutely imagine Richard Lloyd playing it.

I feel like some aspects of traditional Dano construction (specifically the hollow construction and wood saddle) counteract the mid scoop of the pickups a bit and add some musical murkiness and those are not present here.

When you can hear every note in a chord ring out clearly it doesn't suggest things like a fuzzier sounding guitar does.
