Is this MIJ/CIJ Jaguar Cream White or yellowed Oly White?

Post by aliendawg » Tue May 14, 2019 10:13 am

Been a fan of this band for a while but only now figured out this Jaguar is a Japanese model. That means it's got a polyester finish

Ok... Is it slightly yellowed or did they come out in Yellow-ish Olympic White too?

Either way it gives me hope. Maybe my VM Jag can get some nice wear like this one in 30 years or so.

Most white Jaguar reissues are Olympic White. It doesn't even look particularly aged/yellowed to my eyes - that looks like stock olympic white. As for your VM, I think they just don't use the same type of white as the American or Japanese Fenders do, and unfortunately it doesn't really blend too well with other aged plastic parts.

Now that Musicmaster Bass (first pic), on the other hand... that's some vintage yellowing :)

If MIJ likely it is arctic white. Oly is more yellowed. Sometimes they list it as vintage white or vwh.

Olympic white has a lot of variability, but the pictures to me look like the same olympic white as used on the AVRI 62 Jaguar, for example. Generally speaking, the only time I see significantly yellowed white is when it is listed as "vintage white" or when it's actually yellowed over time. I can't possibly imagine that's arctic white on that guitar, but if you know something about the year of the guitar and what colors were available at that time, I'll not too proud to admit that I'm wrong.

Here's a JG66 in Olympic White:

Most white Japanese Jags out there are vintage white (the yellow/cream color). That color was standard for the majority of the years of production.

Have you considered giving your guitar a tan? Extended sessions under a UV light might do the trick.

Seems to have swapped the bridge for a tuneomatic too. Omni are a great band.

Have held this guitar- just a good old CIJ Jag that he's had since he was in Balkans. I think the pickups are stock too- but his playing still is so percussive and had that really quick attack that only a Jag can do. Dude's not much of a gear nut- he told me playing in Deerhunter did his head in having to get his head round Brad's pedalboard ha

Olympic white is pretty rare when it comes to japanese Fenders, afaik.
I've spent a lot of time on various .jp sites, and they do pop up, but vintage white (VWH) is by far the most common white color on jags and jms.

This is a pretty good list / fender japan color chart, afaics:

I guess my link to the Olympic White MIJ Jaguar above went unnoticed :) Anyway, it looks like a direct match to me.

The difficult thing here is to assess the degree to witch the yellowness is due to age and reaction to light, or the original paint itself.

Both the FJ olympic white (OWH) and arctic white, are pretty white, and even the Fender's I've had with oly white nitro, have not yellowed that much over a span of 10 years or so. But I haven't exposed them to much sunlight though :-) I've seen some Fender CS and vintage oly white guitars, that were (light) yellow.

OWH:

Could be suno white as well (SWH) ;-)

In the video at f.inst. 1.58, the guitar looks to me like vintage white:

Well I think the Vintage White was a direct match haha. Judging by the video I'd say it's too tanned to be OWH

He's becoming one of my favorite players of all-time. I'm simply mesmerised by his approach. For some reason it doesn't surprise me that he's not into gear stuff, it's clear Frankie is 100% focused on his playing

Yes!! I'm still deciding if I'm matching the headstock though

Fair enough. The video is a studio with yellow lighting, which is why the drum heads are also yellow, but hey, I could very well be wrong about the color.

Well I guess you have a point. Lighting can definitely be misleading.
