I forgot about the Yosemites! Does anyone have experience with those yet?

Thanks for the list!

A few questions:

The AVRI Set is not the same as the AV65 set that is available now, right?

I'm torn between Q-Pickups, The Creamery Pickups and the AV65. It is going to be my first JM-build.

Q offers three different A5 sets: a 1958 Vintage Correct (7,35 and 8,12 kOhm); then a grey bobbins Hot Bridge, Vintage Neck set (7,68 and 8,10 kOhm) and a Vintage Set (6,98 and 7,19 kOhm). (Why has the Hot Bridge set a lower kOhm value than the vintage correct set?)

The Creamery 58 - is 7,5kOhm and 8,2kOhm so a tad hotter than Qs 58' set

And for the AV65 I did only find 6,8kOhm on the Fender Homepage - but I guess neck & bridge aren't going to have the exact same value, right?

(Lollar, Barfuss and Novak are out of my price-range and GFS is out of the race too atm, Jess Loureiro was another possible source but I left his stuff out of consideration for the reasons others complaint about in the last months).
Qs would be the most "local" alternative with a theoretical 7hours car ride-distance (I would still let him ship them, no worries), The Creamery stuff looks great, but I haven't heard many reviews about either of them. Fenders are the easiest to source (Thomann - as I need plenty of other stuff too from them).

I mostly play Surf-Influenced Garage and Psychedelic Rock. Most of the time with one of my many Fuzz Boxes on... but sometimes clean too.
Which is the one set I should go for?

AFAIK Fender currently sells only the 'Pure Vintage' PV65 set (0992239000) and the individual AVRI (62) neck and bridge pickups (0054444000 and 0054443000).
https://darrenriley.com/product-categor ... r-pickups/

So I assume they are different, as you suggest, but how the 62 and 65 generation pickups differ from each other I will leave to those with that expertise.

The AV65's pickups (individual part numbers from those guitars are 0094012000 / 0094013000) and the PV65 set (0992239000) are the same according to Riley's description of the latter set ...
"Comes stock in the Fender American Vintage ’65 Jazzmaster reissue."

"I just knew I wanted to make a sound that was the complete opposite of a Les Paul, and that’s pretty much a Jaguar." Rowland S. Howard.

The AV65s have both bridge and neck PU around 6.9 kOhm.

Oh, okay. Thank you!

Can anyone say something about the Creamery or Q pickups?

I have 3 Q_pickups sets .
The Jazzmaster vintage set , the Jazzmaster hybrid set and a Custom Jaguar set .

The 3 are awesome . I also have a Jazzmaster with Curtis Novak pickups ( JM-V and JM-FAT ) and the Q_pickups are different but they are really good .
I’m pretty amazed by his jazzzmaster hybrid set .
I also had a Jaguar with Fender Pure Vintage 65 pickups and I prefer The Q_pickups custom set .

Thank you pikmin! I may just try one of his sets! Let's see what happens! :-)

Thanks to all of the posters on here for this information. I'm both educated on pickups now and totally confused.

I made this using Garageband with two guitar tracks and smart drums. I'm using only the neck pickup of my Warmoth Jazzmaster for both tracks. This might give some idea of how the Fender USA '65 RI neck pickup sounds in a swamp Ash Jazzmaster with 500K pots. I'm using an orange Tortex pick. I've been looking at Lollar Jazzmaster pickups as replacements.

I think your guitar sounds very nice in that clip. Don’t you like it? What sound are you after?

Maybe you need a different colour pick :P

Cheers!

Thanks. I just like a higher output humbucker in the bridge(that is a Rose Picasso Alnico II bridge humbucker), and a cleaner pickup in the neck. I am looking at Lollars and Fralins. I have a set of split rail high output Fralins in my Squier Mustang and they sound fantastic. I guess the sound I'm going for is pretty much what you heard in the clip but I'm wondering if some other pickups might sound better and/or different. I've got a Nash JM63 with Lollars and they sound great, too. However, I've got to try the P90 versions in this guitar.

I’m curious about your Picasso - my bridge model wound to 10k with A2 is a VERY low output pickup; it is easily out-gained by stock Squier Jazzmaster singles: comparing either neck or the previous bridge that the Picasso replaced. Is yours actually hotter than the singles?

I had a Squier Jazzmaster(2012 model year) and the bridge pickup on that was a firebreather. I replaced both pickups in it with Seymour Duncan Antiquity I pickups and it really cleaned it up a lot. I think my bridge Picasso is 9.33K. I'm pretty sure the stock Squier JM pickup is way on up there past that. I'm not sure of the output reading for my neck '65 RI but it is still louder than the Picasso bridge by just a hair despite the output readings!

I made this using only a neck Lollar Jazzmaster pickup:

I changed my American Original 60s Jazzmaster from the AV65 pickups to the Seymour Duncan Antiquity for Jazzmaster (aka, Antiquity I). I found a good deal on the set so I thought I would give it a shot.

My goal was to improve the jazz circuit for a richer/jazzier tone because I actually do want to use it for jazz, and I was willing to sacrifice some of the bright top end of the AV65s in order to get it. I also wanted to take my Jazzmaster in a warmer/rounder direction to be a better compliment to my Jaguar, which has the bright tones covered very well.

Immediately after installing the Antiquity I the first thing you notice is that they do indeed have a noticeably darker sound. It was a little jarring at first strum, but after a few test drives now I think they are good sounding pickups. They have less treble than the AV65s, but I also feel those had more than I would ever use and I was always running volume and tone on 8 at max. With the Antiquity I, I can run volume and tone on 10 and it's ok, still a little brighter than I want for clean tones, but it's a very good and usable range.

So with the lead circuit, I think it's a positive. I was hoping for more of an improvement to the liveliness of the jazz circuit, but I'm not sure it made a big difference there. It sounds more or less the same, maybe gives me a little more usable tone roller sweep, but not a big change. Maybe I need to refine my amp settings more. I'll reserve judgement for now.

Anyway - hope that helps someone who might be looking for darker/woodier alternatives.

***

Just to update, I removed the Antiquity I and replaced them with the factory Pure Vintage '65s. I just think they are nicer sounding pickups. The Antiquity I are definitely darker, but I just couldn't get along with them. I like the lively and detailed sound of the '65s.

Does anyone know what the difference between the Pure Vintage '65 pickups and the "Classic Series '60s Jazzmaster" pickups that are found in some of the Mexican models is? Same pickup, different locale of manufacture? Or a more significant difference?
