New Jaguar Day!

Post by øøøøøøø » Tue Apr 02, 2019 8:59 am

VOX Jaguar, of course!

Got one last night from a craigslist ad. Seemed a bit of a project, but with a little bit of love and a few easy fixes it woke right up and is now 100%

It's a combo organ? That sounds like a lot of fun.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Indeed!

The simpler, cheaper baby brother to the Continental.

No drawbars, just four tabs that can be combined in various ways for a handful of cool sounds.

It will pair with my Farfisa nicely... but I do still want a Continental someday

Do you remember which model? Compact combo, Compact Deluxe, Compact Duo, VIP, Fast, etc etc?

The ones that make the sound that screams "Farfisa!" are the Compact, the Compact Duo, the Compact Deluxe, and (to some extent) the Mini Compact.

For the right mix of portability and utility, you probably want either a Compact or Compact Deluxe. The Compact Duo is pretty big and heavy, and the Mini Compact, while it will get you some of the the "flavor," lacks important features like "All Booster" (i.e. "incense and peppermints").

The Compact was the only one that came in red. And the red ones, despite being most common in that model, are worth more.

There's also the wrinkle that certain problems are VERY hard to repair, and render the organ a "parts donor" worth 100 bucks. Other problems are fairly easy to repair, and there's a wide middle ground, too.

I'd say for a gray/beige Compact or Compact Deluxe, FULLY working and in tip-top shape (recently serviced), I might be persuaded to give 1000 bucks if I really needed one. For a red one, maybe a little bit more. For a local sale, I'd ideally want to pay under a grand.

A perfect Mini Compact is 500 bucks tops for a local sale (for me). Ideally I'd want to pay 400 or even less.

A Compact Duo who knows... they might actually be worth a bit more than a Compact or Deluxe, but not to me. And if it's missing the F/AR power supply unit, forget it... you'll never find another. That is a HARD pass in that case.

To test a Farfisa--

Turn on ONE footage (16, 8, or 4) any sound, and play each key. Do they all work? Then turn that footage off, and turn on another (testing all three octave settings).

If a certain key doesn't sound on one given footage, it's possible you've just got a dirty contact. Play the key over and over and over and see if it "wakes up." If not, you might have a broken contact, which is a PITA to fix, but isn't impossible.

If one entire footage doesn't work, there might be a fixable problem in the divider circuit.

If one entire pitch class is dead (say "none of the D naturals work on the entire keyboard") then you have a dead oscillator card, and the organ is a parts donor only UNLESS literally everything else is perfect and clean and it's REALLY cheap (then it MIGHT be worth replacing the dead oscillator card with one from another donor organ... at least 100 bucks in parts cost, and a fair bit of labor too).

Make sure you understand how all the footages work before you try it out (it can be easy to get confused and think one is dead when in fact you're just doing it wrong).

Hope this helps!
