Is it based on the Squier active PU model?

seems to be. the guy "makes" these guitars all the time and marks them up by about double or triple what they go for. he's tried charging like $700 for a squier affinity jazzmaster.

That guitar is what’s called a “Buford Highway Special” in Atlanta. That can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the context. In this case... bad.

Man, I've been seeing this on craiglist everyday when I do my local search for offsets and other cool shit and hadn't clicked on it because it was so cringey. Now that I looked at the photos it's 10x worse than I thought. I've never heard that term before but as an Atlantan I know exactly what you mean. Gonna have to start using that lmaocountertext wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2019 7:28 pmThat guitar is what’s called a “Buford Highway Special” in Atlanta. Yeah, that one's pretty funky!
If you want to have this thread with "Why did Pete Townshend do it? Why did he do this thing to so many guitars?" - I really enjoyed this: http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/gear/guitar/smashed.html

I remember thinking when I was a little kid nearly 30 years ago holding a guitar that cost £80 that I'd saved up for months and months to afford that I'd never understand why someone would smash up a guitar like that. I still don't.higgsblossom wrote: ↑Wed Apr 03, 2019 5:33 amYeah, that one's pretty funky!

I can only understand this from a historical perspective. Teenage angst, rebellion and distinction. It is more or less a statement of "I'm a musician, but I'm not that kind of a musician."
It's a counterpart to the music of their parents: classical music, bigbands or jazz. Where players cared about their beloved instruments, and it's a gesture of provocation: "See, we don't give a shit."
If anyone still smashes guitars today, I think it has become an anachronism. Channel your anger into your music, not your gear...
Btw. it's not easy to smash a Fender. Those necks and bodies are solid wood with not too much angles. Gibsons come with built-in breaking points.

To be fair, performance art and destroying things haven't exactly been strangers. One only has to look as recently as that daft Banksy thing where he shredded a painting as soon as it was sold. Destruction is something that gets a reaction and asks questions, even if those questions have been asked again and again already.higgsblossom wrote: ↑Thu Apr 04, 2019 12:45 amI can only understand this from a historical perspective. I don't think live performances and showmanship will ever be separated, either. Even if you talk about orchestras, the black suits and dresses and the conductor flamboyantly waving around is all part of the show. A jazz band rocking out and smashing guitars would look just as weird as a hardcore punk band sitting around in a circle gazing at their navels, and if either of those things happened it would still be making a statement, y'know? Even Shoegazers standing around like antisocials in the middle of a party their friends dragged them to is an artistic statement whether they think it is or not.
As far as the Fenders go, I'm not sure if it was touched upon in that timeline but the story I heard was that Pete Townshend used a lot of Telecasters cause they were cheap, they could take a beating, and you could somewhat put them back together again more or less.
