Now that you can search sold listings on reverb, gems like this fella can be found. Sold 4 years ago for $850.

This kind of belongs here, because why is this in a museum?

It‘s the „first guitar that Kurt Cobain smashed on stage“.

The post-war American dream was to have a cool guitar, a cool car, and a house with a swimming pool.
Here's 2 out of 3:

For sale. (had a Valentine's discount to 2600 so probably room for an offer).

This guitar is so unique and looks so damn cool. It really has the potential to become an iconic indie rock legend in the hands of the right player.

He just needs another one.
I find it hilarious that the rebellion of Grunge can be musealized like that. I guess people stare at it, thinking “Those were the days *sigh*”. I never understood the whole guitar smashing thing. Especially since it’s not easy to damage a Fender guitar in a way like Kurt.

That museum has always felt far too clean for rock.

Why it took off in the way it did I couldn't tell you, probably it fit well in people's minds with the violent, rebellious nature of rock, but Pete Townsend who's I think widely regarded as the first guitar smasher claims to have been inspired by auto-destructive art, this avant garde-trend in the 50's and 60's where the destruction of something was regarded as an artistic happening. That kind of thing was in the air back then.

And if you've just managed to knock the headstock off your Rickenbacker by mistake you might as well play into something like that and go all out :D

If Musicmasters count, that Musicmaster paint job that YouTube's algorithm keeps pushing on me should fall under this category. That burst and rout, yikes.
