That'll buff out.
Seriously though, looks like a great candidate for restoration. No hunting down vintage correct parts.

Re: 60s Fender Mustang restoration
The Mustang is at my house now and disassembled. Here are some pics, a few are redundant, but may be clearer.
I have a shell pink alder body that I made years ago; I believe I will glue up the headstock cracks, and transplant all the parts to that body while I fix the original body. The plan is to route a clean diagonal line as close to the damage as possible and glue in a piece of scrap alder with the grain oriented correctly.

Headstock is repaired
And I've begun routing out the damage.

I really wish I had an old, or even new, piece of poplar to go back on the body. Anyone got anything they'd sell me?

I’m not sure where you’re located, but back in Atlanta, Home Depot sold decent sized chunks of poplar. Not sure if it would be dry enough for this, but I found some good stuff there in the past.

Got it trimmed at lunch and flushed up with a spindle sander. Now I just need to gently level the top and do the roundover.

Re: 60s Fender Mustang restoration
fair enough...my ocd wouldn't be able to cope with not having the same piece of wood on there...none available via mail order?
