Dakota Red vs Candy Apple Red?
Hey all.
I'm down to these two colors for a new build. The finish will be nitro.
Do you have any opinions on which to go with? I like them both equally for different reasons.

CAR is actually one of my favourite colors on a Jazzmaster, but I know it isn't very popular these days just cause it's so ubiquitous. I don't really have any particular thoughts about Dakota Red.
I think a big factor is if you're doing the finish yourself. I heard it's a pain in the ass to do the metallic undercoat and get just the right evenness and transparency if you're not a robot, so unless you invest a lot in mastering your painting skills it might not really be worth the time and effort to spray something in CAR when there are so many spotless CAR-finished bodies lying around.
And if you're finishing a custom guitar, might as well go with something somewhat more unique, right?

I'm partial to Dakota Red. I like how old timey it looks. And it's a pretty close match to the Rosso Cina that Ferrari painted their 250 GTOs, which I've always loved.
I have a Fiesta Red VM Mustang and have contemplated painting it Dakota Red. If you're gonna have a red guitar, you might as well have the reddest red there is!

I like Dakota more with a mint/parchment/white guard,
but I've recently been turned on to CAR with tort guards

Re: Dakota Red vs Candy Apple Red?
For me Dakota Red is synonymous with the "Any colour as long as it's red" car manufacturer slogan from years gone by. It's a middle-of-the-road colour, about as neutral a red as you can get & sits perfectly next to other boring, characterless colours. In my eyes it makes guitars look kind of like cheap toys. I hate it!
Candy Apple Red, on the other hand, is OK. Deeper, slightly metallic & much more pleasing on the eye. If I really had to chose a solid red colour it'd probably be this one.
Slightly translucent red finishes that let some of the grain show through are a completely different story.

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.
