I just got one of these in vintage white today. The pau ferry neck is super streaky but silky smooth. I might try your oil idea. Thanks.

Be carefull with slathering on oil for days on end ( I don't know if you did, but it kinda sounds like it).
As the wood sucks up the oil, it can swell and press / float frets out of the slots. Also refrets and other fretwork down the line can be a bitch because CA glue won't hold on the oily fret slots.
Nothing wrong with oiling a fretboard once or twice a year; just don't overdo it.

I wish I had before pictures, because before I started you could see that the wood was already pulling away from the inlays. Now that it is oiled, it looks like a healthy fretboard.

The reason I did it twice a day over a longer period of days was to give it plenty of time to adjust before I made a decision to keep applying oil. It has been in its current state for over a week now, strings on and playing, and it is looking and feeling great.

I honestly think Pau Ferro doesn't have the natural oils that Indian Rosewood does. I'm not advising that everyone run out and do this. Be careful. But I don't think we can apply the same rules as old growth rosewood to these new Pau Ferro boards and think there isn't going to be any difference. They are different woods. They are going to need a new set of rules. I am positing that one of those might be a heavy front-end "conditioning" stage to get it to a point where it just needs oil once or twice a year.

I plan on getting pictures up over the next day or two.

I have one of the 60th anniversary MIM in daphne blue. The binding on mine more or less just seems like its just paint and not actual binding. Is this how yours is as well?

Not at all. The binding looks really good. Not quite the quality of my AV65, but really good.

I have an AV65 that is my primary Jazzmaster. I have long had a secondary VMJM that I keep strung with heavy bottom 12s (12 to 60), with the pickups further away, which gives it a unique sound from my primary Jazzmaster. This is replacing my VMJM, so I have strung it up and set it up similarly.

I have done sound tests to see how well it matches the sound of my VMJM. They aren't the exact same. The 60th has slightly brighter pickups. I can't say for sure, but I have always felt that whoever had my VMJM before me aged the pickups somehow to get a bit of a softer tone out of them.

I'm not sure how to add pictures but I think mine looks mostly like yours. When I touch the fretboard part of the binding it just feels like its the pau ferro but painted and when I run my finger along the side it just feels like the maple. No lip or indication there's actually binding like on other guitars I've had with binding. The fretboard edges are quite angular and not rounded.

While Photobucket sucks - I find the site imgbb.com very useful. Imgur is okay too I guess.
Basically you need one of these photo hosting sites and copy the photo's url and paste it into your post. Depending on how you do it you might also need that image icon from above.

I'm curious now how your guitar is looking.
A few months back I had a black one in my hands and also thought...well, not as good as the one on my Jaguar but hell yeah, there is a Binding! :)

Not sure if those pictures are going to work, but even with my not-that-great camera you can see it just looks like a thinly painted strip over the pau ferro. You can even see what looks like the wood showing through in spots, like they didn't even do a very good job painting it. It's the worst toward the upper frets.

Feeling it... I notice a difference in texture between the fretboard and the binding. I think what is going on here is that the binding was put on before the fretboard was radiused and was then sanded down WITH the fretboard.

Also, I can't imagine that Fender would say something is bound and it only be painted. That would be a huge PR disaster. Even the cheap guitar makers in the 1960s had different wording they used when "binding" was painted on. "Edged," for example.

Does all that oil in the wood affect the tone? I'm wondering if it would have a noticeable effect on resonance.

Great guitar. Pau is very good wood and when it is oiled as you did it looks great. Did you swap the bridge? Because their thimbles are narrower inside and you need to change thimbles and i wonder mastery thimbles are direct fit for that hole. Im considering to buy it exact model nowadays
