NGD: 60th Anniversary Jazzmaster, Black
I got one of the MIM 60th Anniversary Jazzmasters for a really good deal on Black Friday, after lusting after the black with tort look for years (with the Classic Player). I have had it for a few weeks now, but haven't played it since the first day, though it sounded really good.
Here is what I want to talk about: The Pau Ferro fingerboard....
I got the guitar from CME and it came very well set up. The Pau Ferro, however, while not being ugly, wasn't exactly my cup of tea. It was light and a bit on the reddish side. This isn't my guitar, because I wasn't smart enough to take a before picture, but like you have seen in all the promotional shots, like this...
So, I decided to do something about it. Besides looking really light, it also just looked really dry. So I took off the strings and oiled it. And it SUCKED UP SOME OIL. So I did it again. I have been really busy with work, so I have just left it on my workbench and oiled it a couple times a day since I received it about two weeks ago. And the fretboard is now looking excellent.
That is not touched up at all. Beautiful lush brown with nice streaks.
Maybe Pau Ferro just doesn't have the natural oils that Indian Rosewood has? It just needs to be oiled...

Yess ! I have a Pau Ferro Classic 60s neck on my PartsMaster and it looks great since I oiled it !
No real difference with a rosewood fretboard anymore...
The feel is different though but I like it !

Well look at that. Makes Pau Ferro necks for parts builds seem more attractive too.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion: I think pau ferro looks nice than rosewood.
It tends to have more character because of the stripes / streaks that aren't as obvious in rosewood, and especially after that oiling it looks beautiful!

Did CME have deals on these on Black Friday? I do not recall seeing any. They sell for ~$950 now it seems.
The FB looks good, although I don't think the non-oiled Pau Ferro looked bad by any means.

Wow!
I talked to a Musicstore employee about this, when they came out and he even applied oil infront of my eyes with no visible effect... so thank you for proofing this! They look really classy!

Yeah. Like I said, I have been oiling a couple times a day for two weeks. The change is getting less and less, but after the first oiling I noticed how much oil it soaked up how quickly, not a huge difference in look. The difference in look came over the next day or two.MayTheFuzzBeWithYou wrote: ↑Sat Dec 15, 2018 9:16 amWow!

With these results, I'm going to tend to agree.Stephen_42 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 15, 2018 7:28 amPerhaps an unpopular opinion: I think pau ferro looks nice than rosewood.

I got it for $950 plus another 10% off, if I remember correctly.mediocreplayer wrote: ↑Sat Dec 15, 2018 8:49 amDid CME have deals on these on Black Friday? I do not recall seeing any. They sell for ~$950 now it seems.

That neck is gorgeous after the oil treatment.

Do you mind sharing what brand lemon oil? I have the same guitar in Daphne Blue that i’d like to do this to and want to duplicate your results by using the same oil.
Looks great, by the way and thanks for posting this!
