His new band with his wife sucks ass, too. He spends half the show now lecturing the crowd and trying to get people to stop dancing and sit on the floor.
i hear this complaint quite a lot when it comes to fugazi.

but there is a few reasons ian used to say this. there's a long interview he did and that subject came up to which his reply was something like "we played LA one time and a kid climbed on the 14ft high PA system and attempted to stage dive into a crowd that was not willing to catch him. he broke some bones and sued the venue. after that, our name was associated with that and we had a hell of a time actually getting gigs in LA after that"

honestly, i've seen more idiotic dancing at punk/metal shows and people getting broken noses because some idiot thinks dancing means beating the shit out each other.

there was a glasgow band called dananananakroyd. they used to be pretty against gig violence. often they would stop the show and call out people fighting and say stuff like "you two, kiss and make up, if your going to be that violent to each other, save it for the bedroom" and rather than do a wall of death at gigs. they did the wall of cuddles.

I've never had any first hand experience with Fugazi outside of seeing Guy at Brooklyn bookstore. I debated saying "hi" and figured why bother him. I know Fugazi catches crap sometimes, or I guess Ian specifically, for trying to control the shows. But I'm kind of with them, in that a bunch of moshing dudes is cool when you're 17, but it sucks for everyone else. After a certain point, who would come to a Fugazi show thinking it was even something that was the right thing to do?

I can't imagine anyone dancing/moshing at an Evens gig?

The gig I saw was the size of a lounge room and people were sat down quietly (yes, on the floor) before they'd even started...

One of my favorite bands of all time and had a huge impact on me. Only got to see them live twice in the 90s here in Washington State, but both were just epic shows. Met Joe Lally in the early 2000s at an art/music venue he might have played at... I was there for another event.

There LITERALLY probably hasn't been a solid month that I haven't listened to at least one Fugazi song since 1989.

Guy's a great guy.

Ian, however, is a dick. I'll never forget what a condescending prick Ian was to my friends and I when we were awestruck teenagers meeting the band before our first Fugazi show.

His new band with his wife sucks ass, too. He spends half the show now lecturing the crowd and trying to get people to stop dancing and sit on the floor.
I’m sorry you had a shitty experience with Ian, but trust me, that is not typical. I live in DC and I see him around pretty regularly. There are always several dudes clamoring to talk to him about god knows what. It doesn’t matter where he is or who he’s with (often his wife and son) , some stranger always wants his attention. And you know what? He usually gives it pretty freely. Keep in mind that he’s been dealing with this for more than 30 years now. Is he always super friendly? No, but I’ve never seen him blow anyone off.

Also, anyone who loves Fugazi and/or Rites of Spring should also check out:
Embrace (Ian’s band between Minor Threat and Fugazi)
One Last Wish (three quarters of Rites of Spring)
Happy Go Licky (100% of Rites of Spring playing stuff more akin to Fugazi than ROS)

Hard to listen to....I played this stuff SO MUCH back in the day....

I like Minor Threat a tad better, but it's apples to oranges.

i saw them in 1998 in detroit with blonde redhead

definitely contributed to me making my first guitar an sg.

i got an sg next to my mustang.

"i'm so tired" is a current and long time fav. that song got better with age.

"asshole dub" is another lost classic.

i saw one of brendan canty's side projects in 1999 or so, that was rad too. he played trumpet on a song.

I bought every Dischord release directly from the label from number 11 (Faith -Subject to Change) to 33.3 (Vile Cherubs - Post-Humorous Relief). I also went back and filled in everything before that (including split releases with other labels). Then, I “grew out” of hardcore and sold all the ones that were worth $$$ over the next 10 or so years. It’s still a bummer to think about that.

Seen them over 20 times! One of the bands that made a huge impact on me as a youngster and stayed with me thru adulthood. Steady diet of nothing might be my favorite.
That’s one of the better ways to spend 100 bucks...

One of the most influential bands on various levels (music, politics, activism, community, economics, Rickenbackers.... etc). I often wished I were from the “ other Washington” in the 80s.

I remember when “Ian from Embrace and Guy from rites of spring's” new band played up here (Tacoma? I didn’t find out about it in time, right around the first ep) and I was lucky enough to see them countless times up through the mid 90s along the I5 corridor. (Although the draconian all ages show restrictions in Seattle meant that you had to stick it out for all the bands, even if you’ve already seen Beat Happening way too many times already...)

A new local venue recently opened with a Dischord cover night (all the bands were pretty amazing) and “fugazi” did all stuff from later albums (and blueprint) which was unexpected and pretty genius. The night was a huge sing along warm fuzzy from start to finish. (Full disclosure: I was part of a last minute “jawbox” when another band had to back out- Teenage me was ecstatic. I first learned to play bass with that stuff but hadn’t played bass on stage since then — very much a nostalgic homecoming but totally unlike how I play guitar).

Extending it some, Dischord was great to discover new music, as pretty much every record was great even if unexpected or challenging, from Lungfish and Soul side to NOU and slant 6 etc. (Tangent: a group of now-old punks from south of Seattle all got Kingface tattoos in the early 90s). The same could be said of 4AD in many ways, albeit at triple the sticker price.
