Not quite as exciting, but this is a Squier Strat I rescued from Goodwill the other day.

Re: Candy Apple Red appreciation thread
my '64/5 JM (used to be pinky) was also refinned by Rexter, but with a gold base.
it's my #1 really (in things of feel and sound), lives at the practice space (along with the BroncoBlaster), and the finish has worn in nicely since i got it!
these pics is when i just assembled it, freshly received from the UK.

Re: Candy Apple Red appreciation thread
Not new or reissue, but I figured I may as well stick this here. I have had a lot of CAR Fenders but was never really sold on the color until I got my '64 Jaguar with an original CAR finish. All the newer ones seemed too dark to me. I had a '69 comp red Mustang at one point also which looked okay. I think this Jag has aged to be exactly what I like best.

Now, with more gold!
I've always wanted to do gold on red and this seemed like a good opportunity. Here it is with its once-red Affinity Strat cousin.

Re: Candy Apple Red appreciation thread
I go back and forth on this color so much - Had some questions about CAR in general so figured I might as well necro-bump, add some pics, and solicit more examples as I'm thinking of refinishing a Telecaster I have; I'm really curious to see if anyone is able to post specific examples of the finish with gold vs. silver as a base:
- What is the general difference between using a gold base vs. a silver base on CAR? Which will come out darker/lighter? Which would get closest to an orange/tangerine-ish/Marr CAR?
- Around what year did Fender switch from silver to gold as the CAR base? (Sorry if that's easy to google - I can't find it)
- What base would have been used for my '96 MIJ below?
Here's my preference:

Re: Candy Apple Red appreciation thread
Saw this in a store recently and I was stunned how great it looked and played. Usually I'm not a fan of CAR but there was something magical about this guitar, with the matching headstock and all! Its MIJ and thus costs a little under a 1000 euros here in Finland.
Edit: Immediately after writing this post I realised that the previous post was the same guitar left-handed. Anyhow, a very nice looking and feeling Mustang!

to answer some of your questions:
I went through a lot of CAR research when I had my Jazzmaster re-finned last year by Rexter.
From what I understood from both Jon and Maulden7, It's mostly the amount of layers of red (pigment mixed with clear) that determines the deepness of the finish. The metallic color of the undercoat has an influence as well, but this seems to be a smaller influence than I expected.
In general silver is a colder red and the red you're after will benefit from a golden undercoat. Also the metallic particles of the gold undercoat seem easier to reflect some light (dixit rexter/ since he's done quite a few in the meanwhile he'll know for sure).
The change from silver to gold was somewhere around late '64 early '65, as I remember it.
I think the MIJ have silver as a base-coat, and gold in the Old candy apple red(just a name/ not referring to an old paint recipe.
hope this helps

Thanks; helps Funny - I'm not a fan of the MIJ OCR at all really, that's about the opposite of what I want. But I understand a lighter top-coat is really what's needed.

Always liked CAR. I was surprised to come on here and see negativity towards it.
