Studio or Synth Monitors?

All instruments that aren't guitars (or bass guitars).

Studio or Synth Monitors?

Post by StevenO » Wed Dec 05, 2018 7:29 am

I'm looking for some relatively inexpensive monitors to play my synths through. I don't need anything too fancy, just something decent. I had been using external computer speakers previously, but I have pretty much since blown those so looking to get something a bit more robust.

I think that would be suitable.

Might not fit in my bedroom, though. Anything a little cheaper and more compact?

What's your budget, how big a room are you playing in, and what purposes are you going to use them for (e.g. mixing vs listening to music for pleasure)?

I'll be using them literally for just playing my synths through something for fun, not for performance or anything like that. I'm not really sure about budget as I don't really know the price range available. Playing through guitar and bass amps tend to provide too much "character" to the original sound of my synths.

Don’t know..but synths generate the ultimate speaker destroying frequencies :)

Roland do a range of keyboard amplifiers that shouldn't colour your sound in the way a guitar/bass amp would:

I run my synths through some Tannoy Reveal monitors (via a mixer), which sounds fine to my ears and plenty loud enough for home use.

Personally, I find amps to be harsh with synths. I'd definitely go with a decent pair of powered studio monitors that are capable of handling the bass frequencies.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Man, monitors are pricey! Not really looking to be spending around a grand for a pair of them...

These new Adam monitors were reviewed rather favorably in the new Tape Op. I'd get the bigger ones if you can afford them - $500 a pair!

I would think 8" powered monitors would work pretty well for synths. JBL308s or Presonus Eris seem a reasonable expense.

The Presonus Eris speakers look more in my budget. Been looking at Edifer too. I don't play LOUD, I just want something that can handle the lows without crapping out. If I could get a pair for less than $250, I'd be pretty happy. At the price range, is it even worth it?

The KRK Rokit monitors would probably serve you well and they don't cost a lot... they also have an optional subwoofer if you decide to add that later.
