Fender American Performer Mustang & Mustang Bass

I really hope they don't use MIJ hardware. I'd want an 'upgrade' vibrato similar to a Jaguar AVRI vs. MIJ.

Imagine- a new decent quality Mustang Vibrato, that isn't nerfed by CBS/MIJ quality issues or 40 years of wear. If they do that, I'll buy a dozen vibratos

I wonder if they have made any adjustments to the vibrato so it actually works.

The Tremolo works great on my USA Mustang, stays in tune perfectly well.

So does mine, but it took work- a lot of which was re-sharpening the pivot points. Maybe mine was particularly worn. It stays in tune better than my Floyd Special guitar now They are also very dependent on the spring tension setting and thus sensitive to any weakening of the springs.

If I was to pay top dollar for a US made guitar, I'd expect the vibrato to work out of the box. Hooped with pissing about with string tension and sharpening pivot points to get the vibrato to simply function.

Sweet! Sunburst and pearloid is a combo I usually abhor, but on a Mustang? Somehow, it’s one of my absolute favorite Fender combos. But only on a Mustang

These are cool, but kinda defeats the point of a Mustang for me. It was designed as a cheap student model, so a four figure pricetag on a Mustang just feels wrong.

I spent £750 on a Cobain Mustang, and even that was too expensive IMO. But I did buy it, so I guess I can't complain.

What I'd like to see Fender do with Mustangs: offer the Squier VMs in competition series finishes, with matching headstocks.

I'd love to see more Squiers (and more comps.) But if pricing matches to the American Special Mustangs that came before at $1k new, that's as cheap as a US guitar gets (let's not get into the ~$400 Firebird Zero because that is a movie prop - not a guitar.) Anyway the Mustang was the 'Deluxe' student model- I guess it'd be sort of like buying a loaded Accord instead of the bottom rung BMW.

Really only the thinner poplar body and more limited available color palette defined it as a 'Student' instrument, given you could get the same pickups/configuration, neck, and vibrato on models stamped as higher end. I wasn't alive back then, but a Mustang would have looked like a really good alternative to a Jaguar back in the day when there was a significant price difference.

I really wish they would have gone with the single coil P-bass pickup on the bridge position in the bass. The J-bass pickup is the only thing with square corners on there and it really ruins the lines of the instrument for me.

These look pretty great IMHO. Too bad about the lack of contours. Those Mustang basses look sharp, I recently got a 71 competition in blue (NBD thread pending) and I have barely pickup a guitar in weeks. Incredible little beasts. I'm glad they are getting some (even more) recognition lately. Regarding the extra JB pup, I much rather have it towards the neck. Overall the American Performer line looks pretty good. A bit more variety in features, colors in a new price range.

The vibrato baseplates don’t appear to have the ‘dynamic Fender vibrato’ stamping on them. That could mean either the pics are bad or they’re using parts from cheaper versions. I hope they’re the proper US units with the stamping.
I wish the Canadian dollar was doing better. I hate the way the prices explode when adjusted for CAD. I can’t see myself paying 1400 for a Mustang unless it feels awesome and sounds incredible.
I hope a local shop gets one, so I can test run it.
I love sunburst Mustangs so much. For some reason I love sunburst on Mustangs and Jaguars more than any other guitar.

FFS Fender, how hard can it be NOT to add a Jazz-Bass pickup to any of the basses when they don't need it? You've already got the MiM PJ Mustang for that, why does the American model needs to be massacred as well?
