I Suddenly Think I Need A Les Paul. Talk Me Out Of It.

For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

My Les Paul Studio is heavy like that, and it always wants to slide off my leg. Frankly, this bugs me a lot because unlike all my other guitars, I have to devote a certain amount of thinking towards simply holding it where I want it, and this changes how I play the thing.

I think it is not weight relieved, which is a good thing they tell me for sound, but really, it's annoying.

I happen to have a later Studio here and it is weight relieved and feels a lot better in that regard. It's not mine, though.

I think I might already have touched on this but since you brought it up again I thought I would say it again.

I tried out one of the new LP Classics with P90's through a DRRI last week in a shop. If my wife hadn't been there it would have likely came home with me.

Cool, he seems like the sort of chap that would fret more over songwriting and recording equipment than guitars.

He had something that was in the neighborhood of a Les Paul.

Here's a funny thing: in the first song you'll see there, "Are You Receiving Me?", the studio version has a great little guitar solo. I guess for whatever reason he couldn't play that so he tried whistling it in that live clip. If you know the song, and it's well worth checking out, it's kind of interesting and funny.

IIRC he mostly played his Ibanez, but had a ‘The Paul’ for a short time before it was stolen while on tour in the States.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Oh, Andy loves guitars. He's a scholar of all things guitar, really.

And he's an amazing player, too. Like, really, really good.

He still had to whistle that solo, though!

But he is a great guitarist. And he couldn't have done it without his Les Paul.

There was one of the silver ones on Craigslist this weekend for $50 and I didn't get it.

Well, the e609.

He's definitely the real deal. I'd put him and Robyn Hitchcock up there as the ultimate purveyors of smart, off-kilter pop.
