I recall someone mentioning Cocteau Twins as good background music while housecleaning. Nice sounding & since she couldn't understand the lyrics she wasn't distracted by trying to sing along.

I've actually been sifting through "shoegaze" tracks as I figured some of it might be pretty suitable.

Full disclosure: I listened to a couple of My Bloody Valentine tracks that I thought from memory would be perfect but they weren't. Just not quite right for what I had in mind.
Then, YouTube decided to auto-play a track that was perfect. Fucking Slowdive! A band I've never even liked. Funny old world! ::)

air (french electronic band) & tindersticks have some pleasant/laidback instrumentals. yann tiersen as well.

and sebastien tellier's first album

Nice but my inner OCD keeps getting pissed off at the acoustic guitar's volume drop around the 0:14 mark (which you'd probably only notice if you wore earphones so probably makes fuck all difference).
