I'll be honest. I've never wanted a 12 string until I just saw your guitar. Killer!

:w00t: Fantastic !!! I like your use of the Gotoh bridge with the vintage surround. I made a XII a few years ago with a 70's Epiphone acoustic neck and used a Gotoh bridge.

rad. i would not have thought that about the flatwounds. only time i've used them is on bass, where i tend to hear a less bright/jangly tone. now i'm curious to hear them on an EXII

what are your thoughts on the feel and playability with flats?

cheers,
eric

Side note: I have flat wound strings on my Fender XII. I started with rounds, then went half-n-half... Now it is entirely flat wounds and I truly think that is the way to go. I've read it sounds more vintage and jangly... And I truly think it does. I get a pack from Pick of the Ricks that they hand assemble to emulate the old style 12 strings. After I put that 12 string pack on - there was no turning back. I highly recommend picking those up. They make packs once every couple of months, but they only make 50 or so and they immediately run out. I missed getting them twice even with the email notification on >:(

I think it feels and plays much much better with flats, man. I don't think I will ever put round wounds back on. They're too bright and loud when you transfer chords. You know that loud finger screech noise? That times 2 for the double strings wasn't appealing for me.

Lots of other people do the flatwound only, so I'm not totally crazy.

Then maybe I am totally crazy, because I mix a set of 6 string Nashville tuning rounds with a 6 string set of flats for my XII.
Or maybe I’m non-comital.... not sure.
Sounds good to me, though.

That looks awesome. Curious about the flatwounds thing now. Might try that when I restring.

Man! How did you find this nearly 3 year old thread! Welcome to the forum. Thanks for kind words Donald!

I got the pickguard built when the body was built by a gentlemen on our forum who is no longer making guitars. But another guy, 'pickguardian' may be able to help. Also, Texas Toast out of Colorado makes clones, and they may be able to help as well.

The toggle switch I got on 'Angelas' back in the day, for like 2 bucks. It's an old 'daka ware leverknob'. I Googled it and found some, but they're nearly 20 bucks now. I'd be happy to help you with any questions... But man, a lot of vodka has been consumed since this build... I love this thing still though.

Recording an album and doing the majority of chord work with the XII through a 61 Fender Showman + tone ring cab and reverb cabinet. If considering a build, Musikraft does XII necks now - I had to go Warmoth as that was the only option; the blocks aren't entirely Fender correct. I see you block-snobs, I know you're out there... but this was all I could do!

Well, I'm pure flatwound all day every day on everything I own. So as LeVar Burton says: Don't take my word for it. I really don't like the noise of fingers sliding across strings, especially with reverb... And especially on recording. I like the mellow flat sound. Plus the majority of 50's and mid 60's Fender tone we all know and love is flatwounds (and compression, of course). So I find it better to emulate a lot of sounds with the flatwounds. But I primarily listen to old 50's-60's.

I used to get cheap flatwounds on everything, but I splurged and got some expensive flats and then never went back. On everything. Jaguar, P bass, Jazz bass, Fretless Jazz bass, Bass VI and XII all have flats. I usually get the Thomas Inkfeld flats when I can. I have the Inkfeld set on my XII string since almost exactly 3 years. Still sound great. I prefer Inkfeld's over Pyramids. Try flats on the XII, man! You can fabricate a cheap set just using JustStrings.com as a test run.

Spitfire has a template.

This Reverb dealer has a bunch (I'm not affiliated and I don't know anything about them...I just found them in a search for a nicer Tort for mine):

If I was a byrd, I'd be mighty sore every time they shut the door and I don't think I'd sing...
