Wow busy night! I didn’t anticipate how good it would feel to commiserate. I’m mostly looking into the human condition of it, and heathy alternatives. Apologies if I was unclear.

How about The Wedding Present? The Cure, Morrissey / Smiths and TWP do not have counterparts, in my opinion. They’re the British Holy Trinity.

I just smile and nod my head.

I imagine it’s torture if you have to go everywhere because there is always crappy music playing and lots of times normies are thoroughly enjoying it, but you have to just wait to be alone to enjoy your glitch punk post-noise afro-goth

Torture? Not for me. At work or in public it’s fine, but at home or in the car it can be difficult! I usually enjoy most shit music because of the anthropological aspect, when I’m forced to listen to it.

When I lived near Boston I had these neighbors who would BLAST reggaeton for about twelve hours per day, every weekend. That was approaching torture!

I try not to judge people on musical tastes, as a friend, but where this gets tricky is the dating scene. Most women I know like top 40 hip-hop /R&B, which is totally not my thing. It's tough as a single dude who'd like to meet a cool woman, especially when I find out her tastes are terrible. I like road trips, and music is ALWAYS on in my truck, so if our musical tastes don't jive, it will likely be a problem.

Yes, I am so glad you have those kind of thoughts too. The thing I find is, people who don’t have what I’d call “refined” musical taste, can be similar towards other art. People who don’t care about art are not interesting to me. That doesn’t mean I think they’re less human. At all. It just means they might not be friend or relationship material. By “refined” all I mean is not mainstream, no one has to like what I like.

I just do not understand why people have issues with other peoples music and act like they have accomplished something by holding their tongue or humoring them.

The answer is in the thread title, what would you do instead?

Having a strong appreciation for music, enjoying unconventional genres, disliking popular music, or recognizing that your tastes are more refined and specific than the average listener does not make you a snob. Judging or evaluating the worth of people who don't share your tastes as being inferior is what makes you a snob, which is nothing to be proud of in my opinion.

Yes, here's some advice: Stop taking yourself so seriously and don't judge others for things that are purely subjective. There's a big difference between taking pot shots at John Mayer and claiming that "tastes differ, and that mine are better and more refined than theirs ever will be".
