two knobs maximum. Speed and intensity.
....because once threads get more than a couple of replies no-one ever reads the OP any more.

Thanks Ulric! ;)

The BBE and the Surfy Trem DIY Kit are in a head to head race right now!

I just checked dimensions of a reverb tank... (thinking about getting a Surfy Bear DIY kit too).

It would fit on the underside of my board - meaning beetween board and and case.
Which is giving me two levels of 4 rubber feet to compensate the floor vibrations. Other people are using their Fuzzy Bear unit on the floor - shouldn't make too much of a difference, does it?

I think the best traditionally configured / sounding one is the aforementioned Supa-Trem, though I prefer the 2 over the 1. It's more tweakability than you asked for in terms of knobs, but I also owned the first version and thought the difference between hard and soft settings was way too extreme—hard was kinda square wave and soft was way too subtle. Even with trim pot adjustments, I couldn't get the 1 sounding like I wanted to. But yep, for trad ones that use an opto circuit, the 2 is the closest to black/silverface that I've found.

That said, I also love the simplicity of the Boss TR-2. I think it sounds really good, plus it's cheap and easily replaceable. It's got three knobs, but you can just park the wave knob in the middle and leave it alone—that's pretty much what I do with mine. And it's a super lovely color! :P

I also like the trem sounds on the Strymon Flint, plus the verb is pretty good too.

The Demeter Tremulator and Monster Effects Swamp Thang are two that are supposed to nail the Fender sound.
