Swervedriver doesn't count in my book because I've never been able to stand them.
Hey Megan, nice to hear your opinion, thanks.
You're welcome! :)

In all seriousness though, I think the "rhythm/lead acts don't meet the standard" argument is a good one, even if they trade off duties. Even EVH playing with himself on "top jimmy" is a far more interesting bit of interplay than some of the acts mentioned.

Swervedriver, my god. I can't recall ever having heard them and thinking there was anything interesting going on with the guitars at all.
This is an excellent rectangle

Ah well, music is like partners and thankfully we're not all trying to date the same girl.

Maybe not quite the level of interwovenness the OP was intending, but Frank Sampedro and that other guy have always been about a bit more than just lead & rhythm. ;)

Can't believe I didn't immediately mention Jamie Hutchings and Ben Fletcher of Bluebottle Kiss.

And for some guitar AND vocal interplay:

The intro of this song is a sterling example of intertwined guitars. If only one of them wasn't a paper-thin, heavily processed acoustic! There's some truly exquisite interplay in the instrumental bridge about two minutes in.

Felt - Primitive Painters (You should find a version with better audio easily enough/probably in the sidebar.)

Also, from the dim and distant past Wire - The 15th, guitars, helpfully panned hard left and right, play almost, but not quite, in unison then splinter away from each other on the outro.

AND THE OUTLAWS.
I haven't listened to all the submissions, but I did go back and listen to Green Grass and High Tides It had been awhile. Brothers and sisters, as much as I love my Television and all, I believe I have heard the Ne Plus Ultra of guitar double acts, and it is a SOUTHERN ROCK band.

And those lyrics: stone castles, Kings and Queens, enchantment. So weird for that genre.

didn't see Wishbone Ash. they were pioneers in the twin guitar world. Early Genesis had a lot of great guitar interplay, Musical Box being a good example.

The Sword is my favorite new school guitar duo. Mastodon and Intronaut are others I enjoy.

Fripp/Belew is my ultimate pairing. So different, but blended so well.

So many of my favorites have already been mentioned, especially from the classic rock/metal side of things.

You'll know it but in case other folk don't...

I'm a big fan of Maurice Deebanks solo elpee Inner Thought Zone. Anyone who likes theDurutti Column, Dif Juz and The Cocteau Twins has on one hand and Solo Vertaine andTelevison on the other has a punchers chance of liking it.

Hmmm....

Personally, I detected more of his love of Yes-type Prog when I tried to listen to it a while back. definitely one to try before you buy, I'd say.

Just been listening to some great 70's pop guitar duos ..

Chris Stein and Frank Infante - Blondie
Ric Ocasek and Elliot Easton - The Cars
"I just knew I wanted to make a sound that was the complete opposite of a Les Paul, and that’s pretty much a Jaguar." Rowland S. Howard.

Bass/guitar interplay Geddy and Alex in Rush, outside my usual indie/pubk sphere of lustening but i liked them when i was a kid and after neil peart's death i revisited them.

Has nobody said Jeff Mueller and Sean Meadows from June of 44?

I realise i've necroed this thread a bit but oh well.

The Cure are another that I think of in relation to this sort of thing. Simple individual parts intertwined to create a more complex whole melody.
That was the appeal of Siouxsie & the Banshees for me.

Treepeople always floored me with the intertwining guitars. Guilt regret embarrassment (1991)

Patrick Flegel and Chris Reimer of Women wrote some of my favorite guitar songs. Super influential for me.

Came here to say this. These guys are an inspiration, and totally under-recognized. Basically sounds like Pink Floyd if they decided to be a post-punk band after writing Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Brilliant.
