Shell Pink with Tinted Nitro

Recently in a thread in this section there was some speculation on what the ReRanch yellow tint would look like over Shell Pink. I was also wondering this myself for my current '64 Jaguar project. So I painted a piece of white primed baseboard, clearcoated the whole thing with clear nitro, then shot part of it with tinted nitro:



I'm not sure I like the result. But a few things to bear in mind; there was very little cure time between coats, and it wasn't sanded in-between or polished out afterward. Also, the amount of "yellow" varies greatly with the thickness of the coat, and I shot this pretty heavy. Still, I think it yields a fair result of what it would look like.

On my project, I planned to leave the original color under the guard, tail neck pocket and plates.

I've always thought the ReRanch SP was too pepto-bismol for my liking. But it's grown on me during this past week since I shot it. I almost hesitate to "ruin" it now. This is going to take some further consideration on my part...

hmmm....I'd leave off the tinted coat...I like the colour as is

Just clear-coat it and let nature take it's course.

I think it would be terribly tricky to do a layer of clear with a super-even, thin layer of tint on top... i mean, if it's not really even, you might run risk of unequal darkening with the tint coat, and then wet sanding... hrrmmm... maybe just play it out in the garden, in the florida sun when completed?

yeah, let the sun do the yellowing. if the laquer you use yellows as fast as the stuff i use it shouldn't take more than a week or two to get a visible result.

My idea was for it to NOT be completely even, and even polish some of it off (like on the forearm and edge of the tummy cut).  I also plan to put the body in the freezer after a month or so. Not really building a relic, just wanting it to match the hardware and look old.

Maybe the sun is a better idea, and certainly easier to do than taping and installing all the parts and then removing them.  I could actually polish and assemble and take it outside every afternoon (barring rain of course)...

hmmmm... the more I look at it, I kind of like the salmon/peach color.

My vote is for no tint or clearcoat.  But I understand where you're going to make it look aged.  I've seen some pics on the web where guys have used a few days of intense sun (Las Vegas I think) to yellow the clearcoat.  He did it assembled, so it didn't yellow under the guard.  I can't find the pics now, but it came out pretty convincing.

I like both.

No matter which you go for, it'll look good. Take your time with it. Don't rush into anything.

Suntanning will work well.  Cbaker on the reranch forum has done it and he has a post or two there showing the contrast.

I'd suntan it...but I'd use a cardboard pickguard in place so the tort doesn't lighten and turn brown or warp in the heat.

The tint looks cool too, but it will be really yellow when the nitro starts to yellow.  Nitro doesn't take very long to yellow...about two years to start.

Both colors look really nice, but like everyone said, suntanning will be the most effective. I say go for it!

I prefer the tinted salmon looking color - has some character to it.  Incidentally, I just saw a old 60s Mustang refined that salmon color at a local vintage guitar store and I fell in love.

My vote is "no yellow" as well.

I'm not a big fan of pink guitars.

The yellowed "Salmon" pink looks better in my eyes. A bit less bubblegummy (if you know what I mean).

I think this is one of those color choices that's really affected by how well a person's monitor is calibrated (and the quality of it to begin with).

At work, I have a calibrated Apple 23" Cinema Display HD, and the shell pink looks really pink, the nitro pink looks a bit less pink.

Here on my crappy laptop at home, the shell pink looks more muted, and the nitro pink looks like 

So, my vote from work is to tint the nitro, my vote from home is to leave it as it is.
