Other priorities at the moment. Telecaster bass in mint condition. Crack whore? I have seen reference to this but missing the point. Can you explore? What's the meaning in relation to guitars?

I've recently been toying with the idea of selling my '75 Jazzmaster, though I'm not entirely convinced at present. Post-1974 JMs are pretty rare.

Yesterday I bought a '78 that had been refinished in slightly metallic pink many years ago. So far I am loving it! I plugged it into my Big Muff and SuperChamp last night and was able to nail some of the Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth tones that I grew up listening to.

I am planning on refinishing this pepto-bismal beast in olympic white eventually. the neck is in pristine condition, and the guitar was clearly cared for. There are no dings or scratches in the body, just 30+ years of weather checking. So far, the only flaw i've found is a very scratchy volume pot.

An added plus is all my cool stuff was made in 1978! (My wife was born in '78 and I also drive a '78 MGB ;) )

I am intrigued by the extra mass of the headstock & am in the process of making a couple of JM's with that larger design.
Supposedly it adds sustain but I have yet to play on that type of neck.

I am as always, on the fence about the esthetics, I'd love to hear the experiences of those that have both sizes.

Resurrecting this long thread... I've heard some great clips of 70s JM and the strong pickups are consistently mentioned in the many comments.

So I want to get a 70s set made up for my reissue. Could anyone help me with the specs? What I know so far is that 70s Fender pickups were double dipped in lacquer instead of wax and the wire would be plain enamel. I've found a guy running a company called Q Pickups in Croatia who builds pickups using tsp method.

Does anyone know the gauge of wire, approx number of turns and output?

as for the "strong" pickups - I didn't do the measures, but I consider the signal from pickups in my '72 JM to be approximately as strong as Seymour Duncan Antiquity II Mustang pickups I have in my mustang - gainwise. I really had to level the bridge one super-close to the strings to level them out properly to my liking.

I can do the basic measurement (resistance etc) if you want.

Yes please! Measurements of your 72 would be super helpful.

:) 8)

If anyone else has specs for post-CBS Jazzmaster pickups please post them - we can compile them and add them to the library. Info on this era of pickup seems a bit thin on the ground... surprising as the clips I have heard sound great and are different to earlier guitars.

I have a 77, SB, black pick guard.

Sounds good. Swapped it for a computer in 1999, wonder how much that computer would be worth now...
