Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks - Sparkle Hard

Post by Dok » Fri May 25, 2018 8:44 am

Is finally starting to grow on me after about five or six listens. Malkmus is my all-time favorite guitarist & songwriter and a stellar example of a goofy weirdo continuing to be goofy and weird. His post-Pavement records are really consistent and generally overlooked, but you definitely have to be willing to go along for whatever trip he's on at the moment.

Really like the bits I'm hearing from this release.

I've been meaning to pick this one up. I like what I have heard on Youtube. He never disappoints. They have become a tight band through the years. Definitely a bunch of underrated players as far as I'm concerned. Malkmus has always been in my top few forever.

It’s a great record. Feels like the first time the production actually matches the songs all the way through the album. I love it. Anyone going to a show of his and want to pick me up a shirt?

Definitely a grower. "Shiggy" hit me right off the bat though.

You were not kidding! Caught them in Cincinnati and am so glad I got there just in time to see Lithic. Amazing mix of Au-Pairs, Fall, Devo and other goodness. They said it was the last stop with Malkmus but they were going to do some more shows on the way back to Portland.

Speaking of Malkus, he and the band were in fine form despite a few technical glitches. The new material sounded great (especially the solo-keyboard accompanied "Freeze the Saints") and was very well received, but nothing like the response when he did an all-Pavement encore (No Tan Lines, Shady Lane, In the Mouth a Desert and Box Elder!). No Jazzmaster this time around (just his SG Guild and Goldtop LP), but he did have a great shirt that just said "Steve" in an early 90's sitcom font, with a picture of him and his JM.

Some pics...

Is this the most chill that a band has ever chilled? It's so restrained that it makes Spoon look like Motley Crue.

I think it’s funny that every time The Jicks release a new album, several reviewers will end up saying “ This is the one that feels just like a Pavement album.”

I find this album to be great and, of all SM’s previous releases, most similar to Piglib. I think the production is just right.

Catching the band in a week in Phoenix.
great OSG deals with: ncarey13, skip.
great TGP deals with: drjoel, 12strings, Tim P, angrybandnerd, echobaseone, guitarpkr67, jcampbell331

For me, the album has the first track I actively dislike. Rattler. Yuck. Awful.
Hope they don't play that one. I like Sparkle Hard but it's not my favourite.

lol yes and I thought Malkmus had given up 'pot'. I actually quite like Autotune but Rattler is just horrible. I do like the coda at the end of the last track where he goes all vocoder on us though.
