Glad I searched this thread before posting an announcement from the e-mail I just got from D'Angelico. I guess they had my e-mail as I stopped by their booth at NAMM a few months ago in an attempt to win a free giveaway. I think for free, these wouldn't be a bad deal. I'm sure some will disagree, tough crowd here. :freako:

I was going to say, "hey, any free guitar is a good deal," but then I went back to page one and looked at the thing for the first time in months.

A thousand times nope. You couldn't pay me enough to contend with having to look at...that.

It definitely is ugly! I wonder if it will be prone to Neck dive like the other D' Angelico's? Arguably the ugliest Headstock on a Guitar. Too bad though because they're good Guitars.

It's like most Cars of today. You gotta shape the Bodies. You can design them beautiful or ugly. Why go out of your way to make them so ugly?

The original headstock designs for D'Angelico were done by a guy named Hugo Cimelli, known as Duke, who was a jewelry designer/maker but also a guitar player. Duke was apparently close enough to John D'Angelico that John signed his affidavit of support when he became a US citizen in 1934. The headstocks were super trendy when they were designed. A typical art deco aesthetics that must have looked better than everything else on the market in the '30s. But just like with everything else that's cutting edge trendy, it can look awful by an equal measure once the trend has passed.

To keep a very period-specific headstock design like the one on original D'Angelico and change the body shape to something that not only doesn't speak the same stylistic language but looks just plain unappealing, is just a no go. As much as I dislike the model in question, I think it would have looked a bit more acceptable with a very simple headstock design (think Talman style).

Did anyone see that black one with a trem and blue pearloid guard? It’s horrendous! I kinda want one! :D

I think I might like the Ludlow model a bit though... or maybe not :s
