The Voidlander. Because... it's hollow, sounds a bit like 50-60's B Sci-Fi movie titles (same era as offsets and 335's emerged) and then you can take or leave the camera reference.

if you pick any of my names, send me a unfinished/unloaded body.

i look at it and for some reason, i think of early 1900's cruse liners like the lusitania. well because you are a luthier. something along the lines of "luthitania" or a variation of such.

at the same time. it also makes me think of the 37 caddy. so something along the lines of "3790" because it has p-90's

Some awesome names there, Sleazy! :)

So more progress on this - I hollowed out the core today and cut through for the rear route cavity. The recess for the cavity cover will be cut from the back once it's all glued up to the top.

I also got my first look at what the join lines with the "wings" on the body blank are going to look like... I don't think they look too bad from the back, but they're definitely visible from the sides! I guess I won't know how I feel about them until it's all together.

I think this one's going to get a gold top finish with natural back. I'm interested to see if this lighter coloured piece of the heat treated poplar is a good visual substitute for mahogany. It does exhibit some of the same "chatoyance" of Mahogany, in that it's very reactive to the angle of the light hitting it. The centreline sometimes looks good, but is mostly very visible because of this! I'm not too bothered.

Image

I included a strengthening boss around the rear rout cover so that the screws have something to grip into. Back thickness is 7.5mm for the most part, but 1/2" around the cover.

Image

The cavity cut came out much cleaner than usual, because I used a raster toolpath that only takes one line at a time. Using the "offset" toolpath has a tendency to leave little walls and islands as it goes, and sometimes these snap off as it cuts.

Image

The aforementioned very visible centreline! I'll probably give it just the slightest skim off (0.3mm) just to check it's not being exacerbated by glue residue.

Joins are much less visible from the back than they are from the sides

I still think 335 (in italics) is by far the most clever response. I won't even try to be clever with mine because that can't be topped.

Seeing the rendered image also got me thinking about nautical terms like Corsair... and then realized Schecter already landed there, with a semi-hollow model no less.

But running with the theme: Schooner, Clipper, Buccaneer, Flying Dutchman, Vanguard... damn, Kay had a Vanguard.

Wouldn't be tempted to go with Titanic, but what about the TITAN?

I cut the top carve profile today, here are some arty pics for your delectation! :D

The surface is quite rough straight off the machine, and there's a "scar" on one pass of the toolpath where I lost some vacuum pressure, so it cut a little deeper while I was getting it sorted. It will all sand out, though.

Got her off the machine just now... Still LOTS of hand sanding and finishing to do!

I've cut the neck pocket to take a modified Strat heel as a set neck, and it should look decent and have that nice continuity between the body perimeter and the neck edges like on a 335.

I haven't made the jig to modify the neck yet, so I've not been able to mock that up; but initial signs signs for ergonomics are good. It feels great under my arm and supports my picking hand without being too deep. Definitely a better thickness for me than a 335, which is a bit thin for me and leaves me wondering where to put my elbow!

It isn't light; I picked a particularly heavy piece of poplar for the back and it has a full centreblock. But if I had to guess I'd say it weighs about 5-1/2 lbs, not bad for such a large body, and I expect it will balance well when the neck is installed.

I was planning on installing cream binding but I think masking off the top will do just as well, and will save the bother of building up the binding around the neck pocket where the carve makes the body a good bit deeper.

How do you manage to create designs that seem to encompass everything I need? I want this guitar! HOW MUCH?!

Gorgeous Dan!! I almost think you should leave the upturned edge the way it is!

Have you ever thought about carving the flat end of the neck pocket "tongue" (see last picture you posted) so it meets up with the neck to look like a neck-through type guitar? I wonder how easy it would be with your CNC setup...
