NAD Marshall Lite IIlb 18 Watt Clone

Post by HNB » Sat Sep 09, 2017 8:51 am

I got this in trade from Skip. I am excited to give it a try once I can find out which tube goes in which place.

Here is what I am looking at. Pre, p1, pa *2, and rect.

I have a el34, el84s, ez81, and two ecc83s tubes.

I am excited to hear how it sounds. It has volume, tone, and master volume. The enclosure looks pretty awesome and it is sturdy and looks well built.

I looked at the picture Skip sent me before shipping and it looks like the small ones (ECC83S) go in Pre and P1 since in the picture the other three are the taller tubes. I was able to identify the GTEL84S because it was printed upside down compared to the other two tubes to go in the next space by PA. The two after that I figure are EL84 then EZ81 because the 81's guts look black ish and the 84's guts are more grey like the picture. Any amp people able to verify I am probably right? Also it is picking up some noise. This is probably because I had to plug it in to a power strip to reach my power filter strip. That extra cheapo strip with the red on off switch that lights up is probably adding some signal noise I am guessing.

You´ve read it correctly.

In stock form they suck.

In the vid,none.
That is after i made a proper amp out of it.

The stocker is a simple circuit alright, but it even lacks a real tonecontrol. Mark..these are opinions, that´s all.
Point of mine being that i´ve never understood the hype surrounding them.

Ah I see. I didn't know anything about them. Just thought it would be a fun amp that is lower power so it wouldn't shatter the house windows. :D

Why not use it as a platform then?
That Ceriatone in the clip i did for a cust. Basically the stock EL-84´s and in turn the EZ on a switch,to pick either EZ or silicon rectifier.
Then add a tube up front. That way you´ll get enough gainstages to make that thing actually perform something.

Not sure what that means. I don't do amp building or anything like that. This has a power control so I can turn the volume at full to get max gain at a quieter volume if I want. If I want to use the full 18 watts, I can turn the power to full also.

Then, take it to someone that does.

Short answer is that the amp needs an extra tube. An extra 12AX7/ECC-83. That installed you can make things happen...

As a twostager it needs to be driven, nah SLAMMED,into the wall to make it work. Compare that last small Geloso 18 watter i just put up a post on. With a mere two gainstages it CAN be done, but certainly not in the form of the stock Marshall as far as i´m concerned.

The "18 watt rage" that´s been going on for the last 20yrs or so DO carry merit though IMO. That atop EL-84´s is one of the very few tubes that actually folds in a usable manner when pushed. Ie;they actually contribute to the entire picture.

Have you had any more time with it? I'm guessing that it would be loud as hell when cranked!

Oh yeah. At full power it is louder than I feel good about playing in the house. Neighbors are pretty close. LOL

I am wondering with PA1 does it need to be an EL84S or can it be a normal EL84? Also does the Pre and P1 need to be an ECC83S or could it be just an ECC83?

Differences between the various "types" of EL-84´s you can disregard.
Some of them were developed for higher B+ voltages but history has proven to us that basically any EL-84 out there will surpass what datasheet tells, and then some.
It´s cousin, the PL-84,has been hit with 700 volts to no ills in for instance the Hohner Duo 1200.
If you want to be on the safe side at all times try finding a matched pair of russian made 6n14p. They´re one of the sturdies 84 type tubes out there and should be reasonably cheap if you pick them up on for instance Ucrainian e-bay.

Same goes for ECC-83.
The various nomers of tubes,in general, are really nothing but specifications. Ie;tubes that do not meet datasheet specs are..not tube of the given designation. So. If an ECC-83 is an ECC-83s amount from slim to none as far as differences them between.
In short?
Install any damn 83 you fancy and be done with it. ;)

I was concerned because something I read said there was a jumper between pins and it can cause some amps to redplate or components to fail using an S vs nonS tube?
