Who's digging their MXR Distortion+ ?!

Post by Pacafeliz » Sun Jul 30, 2017 11:19 am

...well as i mentioned before, last week i was lucky enough to finally pick up one of these amazing little boxes. a "transition" model from 1982 it seems, for 20 Euro, cuz it has a slight crack in its shell (HOW THE HELL...?!).

i'm loving this thing so much, i've been playing thru only this into the amp ever since i got it!

i also have one of the new Dunlp reissues but it seems to add too much noise somehow, and the sound -sorry- IS not as much alive as with the old one.

so... who's loving theirs?!
it's so damn simple but ROARRR!!!

i know Bob Mould seems to have used one of these too, who else?

Yep, love mine. It's currently doing main dirt duties on the gf's bass board. It's an early block logo model and I don't know what the stock diodes are (I assume silicon because it goes louder than unity). It's been modded for a switchable bass boost and a switch for clipping LEDs. Just a really versatile dirt box that can get nice and fuzzy.

This is on my short list of dirt boxes to try. Might be my first build attempt since it's a pretty simple circuit.

The Distortion+ is a superb pedal. So too is the DOD 250. Two of the best bang-for-buck drive pedals out there.

I've been looking for a modded one...madmike makes one, and this guy in orange county makes one also. Need one with the bass switch and some other stuff. I'd really like a 1978 one or earlier, script logo.

Yep. Was my first distortion pedal and I'd say that one that shaped "that sound" for me. I've chased all kinds of different flavours for years, but realized that the D+ is just it. Exactly because of what you said. It's ALIIIIIIIIVE :w00t:
My first was a vintage block face with script plate. Foolishly, I sold it. Bought and sold about three more over the years ::)
I currently have a modded (true bypass, silicon/germanium hybrid) script reissue and one that I built for myself; that I call the Plus//Minus. Which is basically a hybrid silicon/germanium, but with no volume knob and the addition of a voltage starve. It suits my needs perfectly.

I use mine with the distortion dialed all the way back and the starve at about 50%. Goodness, that sound :? I've come to learn that it's all about that liveliness and the decay with these things. Nothing else can quite touch it. 8)

A pedal I could never sell. Beyond simple, but super effective.

miss my old one, got it from a pawn shop for $30 back in 1994.

loved that loose, ballsy sound.

...what surprises me is, many a pages say it's not a distortion pedal, but more of an overdrive. Wth? This thing is almost fuzz!!!

Really nice to just use it with the guitars volume knob.

I love them. I have one from 1979/80 & also a DOD 250 from the same period.
What I like about them is the versatility, you can set them as a straight boost or OD/Distortion & at the end of the dial they go all fuzzy.... I stack mine :)

I did have a reissue for a while, its was completely different & quite rubbish. Think the new reissues are supposed to be good ditto the DOD 250's.

I want an EQD gray channel. They [allegedly] have enough bass for bass guitars and all the clipping options you could want.

Me too dude. My bass board project so far is rocking a SS/BS Mini, but I keep thinking about the Grey Channel. How does the Distortion+ sound with bass on your gf's bass board?

freakin ace. I read Al Cisneros uses a modded 250 as his main bass dirt and it's in that vein (unfortunately, we don't have access to any vintage ampeg/orange rigs to crank). Sort of fuzzy and sizzley but without getting too mushy or too scooped. Definitely doesn't need a blend like a lot of bass dirt. The fredric scrambler clone is also on her board (which has a blend) and they stack REALLY well.

Glad to hear it! When I get my bass built m, I'm gonna have to try a Grey Channel out.

i miss my old one. i built a clone of a dist + and put it in the same box as a modded mxr microamp because i read that was what guy picciotto used on the last fugazi album. it sounded like god chasing you down the hallway of a hospital..... in a good way. i sold it for £100. i would not mind another one but sadly, my main distortion tone is a rat nowadays.

i have a distortion III at a friends house but im not that into it. it's strange how adding a tone circuit can really change the feel of the pedal.
