Re: Clean L-Series Jazzmaster score on Reverb
The new L series paint looks pristine and unfaded. But the big difference that stands out to me is the amount of overspray on the red. It gives the center more of an orange hue vs the bright yellow on the D+B. Very good possibility the earlier one was from when they still used the different nozzle (pre-target burst).
How do the two necks and pickups compare side by side?
BTW, I still have it for your D+B based on looks alone. (And this is coming from the owner or a '64 thats not too different from your 65...well yours is a lot cleaner.)

I sold it on condition that the buyer offer it back to me if ever he puts it up for sale. I've bought back three guitars in the past and depending on how good this L-series is, could totally see myself buying back the D&B in the future.kosmonautmayhem wrote:Oh man! Part of my willingness to sell is that I would love to somehow work my way into a 59 JM with tort, which would require some wheeling, dealing and cash on hand.

I can get with that thinking.takeittothemall wrote:I sold it on condition that the buyer offer it back to me if ever he puts it up for sale. Re: Clean L-Series Jazzmaster score on Reverb
Well, the guitar had a once-over by local Jazzmaster meister Dave Ayers. It needed a few new height adjustment screws and one new intonation screw, for which we used the same screws used in the Mastery bridges, as the screws from reissue Jazzmaster bridges had a different threading. We adjusted pickup height and ended up replacing the rhythm circuit switch. The original one still works, but is less reliable than the new one.
It's now playing and sounding awesome. I've been struck by how fat and satisfying the pickups sounds. Almost a perfect representation of the ideal Jazzmaster tone as it exists in my head. Upon cracking open the pickguard, we made an interesting discovery (though I'm not sure how interesting or unique this really is).
AY. Unless there's an Aluicious Yellowstone who wound pickups at Fender in the mid-60s, I believe this stands for Abigail Ybarra. Does anyone know how unique this is for a Jazzmaster?

What a great find, that starburst looks awesome! She does seem to be a closet queen.
Looking around the web I couldn't find much related to Abby JM pickups other than this from an auction:
Would they use stamps in '64 and then reverted to handwritten signatures?

Yeah. It looks like yellow stamping occurred in 64, even though handwriting is what I've seen on 64, 65, and 66 Jazzmasters. This thread partially addresses it:Stam wrote:What a great find, that starburst looks awesome! She does seem to be a closet queen.

It looks like the neck has TWO double-stamps - is it a B or a C width?

I think it's probably a B neck, though on the chunkier side. Do you know what the measurements are of the various neck sizes?will wrote:It looks like the neck has TWO double-stamps - is it a B or a C width?

Great Score! The class of 65. I like the new one also but I have no attachments. Some people like the binding and consider it an upgrade but being old school on a Fender I like it without the binding but it's a personal choice. Either way you have both bases covered and a nice little start on your IRA lol
