N12SGD! Revelation RJT-60/12

Post by Ceylon » Tue Apr 04, 2017 6:59 am

I'm psyched. I haven't had a NGD in, well, going on like two years now I think. Since I got the VM Jag. But I digress...
It arrived today, only not to me. I had it shipped to my sister's place in Sweden to dodge a local tax border. Not sure yet when I can go get it, but hopefully not long.

She sent me a couple of pictures just to ease my mind and show me that it was OK. They're tiny, but I can't wait to announce this thing, so here goes.

It came in a box like this...

...And for what reason I know not, because it looks like this...

...So all those of you interested in cheap electric 12-strings, stay tuned for more pictures and a review!

Just a few quick pics. I've had it for three days now, but it's hard to even put it down for long enough to snap a few more. My first impressions with this guitar are really great. It has a few flaws, for sure, but for less than 300€ I had a well-designed, nicely finished electric 12-string, embellished with features and feeling solid, delivered to me. You can't beat that. I really think this is the best choice out there if you're looking for a brand new, electric 12 for less than 700€.

I'll get more in depth with both pictures and reviews later. But first I'll go play it some more.

What's the quality of these guitars like? Are they on par with Squier?

It's a hard comparision to make just based on a few days, and also since people have reported having quite different experiences with their Squiers. My VM Jaguar, the red one in the pictures, is the only one I have played for any longer time. It's an extremely solid instrument, one of the high-quality ones for sure, but before I got into setting it up it felt rather flimsy.

Time will tell how the Revelation holds up, but yes. I think it's about the same level of quality. The frets are level and filed properly, the finish is spotless (well, there's one spot, but it's on the back, under the spring cover plate), the setup left a few things to be desired but I have a feeling it's been sitting in storage for a while and then gone through international shipping, so that's understandable. The pickups are Entwistles that are actually really nice, though I think P90's might be just a tad too dark and growly to really complement a 12-string. The wood seems good too, someone said it might be alder but I can't tell. I'm having a few issues with tuning but I think that might be due to vibrato use, nut slots being too narrow and the setup not being quite on point yet.

To summarise, all the major things are remarkably good, but it's not perfect. Is it well worth the money you pay for it, which is less than the VM Squiers were at launch, which was less still than they are now? Yes, no doubt. Not perfect, but with a bit of TLC and a decent setup you'll have a well-playing, great sounding, sturdy-feeling instrument.

There's a lot of really smart little tweaks to it. One of those is the nut. It's about 50mm wide, which completely removes that typical 12-string issue of the string pairs being too tight together. You really don't have that here, the trade-off being that it's a massive neck that someone with smaller hands might find kind of unwieldy, especially while playing chords.

Another thing that just feels great is the tuners. They're Kluson-style, but the keys themselves are thicker and rounder. They feel substantial in your hands, very stable. And that can be said for the whole guitar, pretty much.

Finish on my thinline greenburst was flawless bar a slight mark on the edge of the F hole. 5 way selector switch is Artec as are I believe the pickups despite being spec'd by Entwhistle. The jack, pots and 3 way selector felt a little cheap but all functional. Frets and setup was fine on my out of the box. Mods I made with mine were out of taste, not necessity. They really are great guitars and a very solid mod platform for hardware/ electronic upgrades. Certainly feels a bit more special than a Squire.

They seem to mostly be selling them in the UK, but I've seen online stores in Germany and the Netherlands selling them as well. I bought mine off a site called hotroxuk.com, since they were the cheapest and did shipping outside the UK. There might be someone selling them in the states too.
