You guys have been amazing with feedback on these guitars. Any thoughts on this one? How overpriced is it? Anything look suspicious?

Nothing jumps out right off the bat. Looks a lot like my old 66. I think the price is about 400 to 700 too much, but it's a nice looking piece. But, I'm not an expert on vintage so someone else may see something I don't.

I would feel that $2600 to $2800 is a more fair price. Also, are you close to the seller? I see shipping is $199. Depending on where you're located this might actually be a good deal. I sold mine in similar condition around September for $2500.

Looks like it's a 'faux burst'. Some people don't like them as there is no real wood grain. It was a CBS cost saving exercise to use up scraps of wood that weren't so good looking and meant they could glue 5 or 6 pieces together.

Does the Faux Burst status reduce the value?

Seeing as how it was listed 11 months ago, it's not exactly flying off the rack at that price. :-/

Whereas the "faux Burst" story might be an exception, it is hardly the rule. Price and lack of a case might also be a factor why it's still for sale?
This story also exists about earlier years, that solid colors were used on imperfect wood that would not show through the thicker finish, so not only for the CBS era.

Another one is that during the first year of takeover by CBS, fender had hundreds if not thousands of fender period parts, pre-cut bodies, necks, inlay material, fret wire, pickups and electronics etc. these " left overs" were used on models ranging from mid 65,66 - to who knows when? At least until they were all used.
So the chances are that you may also have a 66 with 65 parts. Personally I can't hear the difference between a 64 -65 -66

I can see wood grain through the burst on the link the OP posted, I've also seen earlier 3tb models with varying degrees of paint thickness. When they paint by hand, there will always be variations.

The only rule is, buy what you like, that which speaks your name and enjoy it.
Think Harry Potter, the wand chooses the wizard Lol
