HNB wrote:Thanks for all that info! I am happy to hear that because I was hoping to emulate the sound of the Japanese band The Pillows and their lead guitarist uses an OD120. Those are pretty pricey and I didn't want to have to do all the updates to one so I figured I would give the R30 a try.
If you want to get specific his is an OD120M which is even more expensive now.
indiandysummer wrote:These amps are a real modern Orange classic, and deserve all the praise they get. They are SUPER unique to the modern Orange line. More like the AD30 than the RV series. They're probably the closest thing to an old OR120 as far as tone goes (way more gain available on the R30). I love these amps. I just sold mine, which was probably really dumb, but oh well.
If you start missing yours you should check out the new Rocker 32, i'm glad that Orange is bringing these back. I'm hoping i'll get a chance to play with one later this year but from what i've heard they're very much in the same vein as the old Rocker 30.

Yeah, I saw the rocker 32. Honestly, I'm not interested and would just get another rocker 30, or try an AD30HTC or TV50. I don't need the f/x loop or stereo features, power scaling, and I'd rather have the EL34 power section and in a head format. Don't get me wrong, it's cool, but not for me.

New preamp tubes installed. I don't feel like I notice much of a sound difference. The clean channel is still clean. I don't find any lack of headroom like a person complained about online, but I am not really able to turn it up louder than 50% because it is just too loud for in my living room. The distortion channel might sound a little brighter than before, but if there is a difference, it isn't night and day to me. :) I will leave them in and see if anything changes as they break in. You can see the JJ power tubes. :D

I couldn't do it - although a lot of pedals have the right thickness, aggressiveness or girth, no pedal comes close to having the same string separation as good amp distortion. Important if you do more complex chords than power chords with distortion.

Nice. Tung-Sol 12AX7's and JJ power tubes are/were my favourite (I am currently in a tubeless state). Bet they sound great!

Got this crate kit because I wanted to use it for smaller pedalboards. Works great! New patch cables came today also.
