more rhetorical than direct. sorry to be a bit oblique, tribi9.tribi9 wrote:I dont think I understand your question.
it just amuses me to think that there will come a time (10, 20, 30 years away) when the current new guitars faked up to look old we see all around us now, will actually be traded on the vintage market. something deliciously absurd in that prospect.
imagine the dealers trying to work out what is original fake wear & original fake damage, what is fake fake wear & fake fake damage intended to look like original to deceive the market for vintage relic, and what is orignal fake wear & damage which has been subject to authentic subsequent wear & damage.
capitalism. who'd have thunk it.

Re: future cheap gear.
"It seemed like the thing to do at the time." can have value. The relic phenomenon is definitely a reflection of the weirdness of the current moment.
Vintage instruments are out of reach for most young players, so maybe the relic recreations are what they covet and will shell out good money for in 20 years when they all have boring desk jobs and feeling nostalgic.
I mean people in their 30's are paying absurd sums earned at their web/graphic design jobs for well-used 20 year old skateboard decks.

Re: future cheap gear.
Shouldn't be too difficult, as many relics look completely ridiculous and fake already, like disintegrating 'distressed' jeans. They'll just look more ridiculous and fake in 30 years (particularly looking forward to seeing dark orange/brown pickup covers and control knobs because people decided to 'do the tea trick to make them look a bit more authentic'... )vale wrote:imagine the dealers trying to work out what is original fake wear & original fake damage, what is fake fake wear & fake fake damage intended to look like original to deceive the market for vintage relic, and what is orignal fake wear & damage which has been subject to authentic subsequent wear & damage.

Fake aging stuff so it looks authentic. Makes perfect sense to me.

Re: future cheap gear.
I don't know about what will be cheap in the future,
But I have predictions on the other end of the scale.
TC hyper gravity will raise in price due to it being the 1st multiband comp(that I'm aware of)in pedal form.
Mxr variphase is bombing right now but I guarantee as soon as some mainstream guitar hero uses it every1 will want one.(see Dunlop rotovibe)
I also think some cheapo plastic pedals will gain value in the future due to many of them not surviving thru the years.
Also, I think guitars made by Daisy Rock and Luna will increase in value due to the niche market they sell to being small and limited. Look at what hello kitty strats sell for these days.

What is acoustic? Oh, you means a grandpa's guitars? A grandpa's guitars? That's for pussies and grandpas. I think you know it.

Not trying to get political here, but was listening to BBC america on NPR and they were talking about how american guitar prices are increasing in the UK due to current policies. Based on what we've heard... Mexican made Fenders may cost more here in the US than ones made here due to tax breaks for domestic models or fees imposed on imports.

I know a guy that's got a complete mint set of the Blind McKee "PowellPeralta" boards that he bought cheap for £500 each that are worth thousands now.
I agree with you on buying used boards though...

Re: future cheap gear.
Why not? They're perfectly fine guitars. Extemely well made and sound decent. Not my personal cup o' tea, but they've been exceptional for the past 30 + years, why would anything change?MKR wrote:PRS's. in the future no one will want them. not even blooze players.
