Looks like a fun project!
What did you use for the black stain?

Re: Non Traditional Phantom Style Guitar
First i sanded to 600, than ive made the Body wet and sanded the small "woodhairs" away, stained it 3 Times with "holzbeize". Next step was oiling it with boiled linseedoil. Quick polish with wax, finished.

Re: Non Traditional Phantom Style Guitar
Pickup ordered and needs a propper setup.
Guitar feels solid, but without the setup it sounds like crap, haha!
Any Idea about a Strap that matches the phantom?

Re: Non Traditional Phantom Style Guitar
I dig it. I have an extra 24" scale neck and this project has made me think I need a little phantom. I'll slightly reduce the body size and use a surface mount trem and toaster pickups I have laying around.

Re: Non Traditional Phantom Style Guitar
YES! Ive got that Cat-approvement!
Ive acquired that overwound Toaster, should read 12k and they were only made in the 80s or 90s and it works realy well with this guitar! Couldn't be happier!
Its finished and sounds RAD!
Somehow it sounds like i wanted it, Tonally pretty clear, focused and punchy, with a lot of punch!
And the tuning stability is realy good with the bigsby!
Two things will follow:
-Custom Decal for the headstock
-New Pickguard, ive realy f*cked that one up. Look at the Pickupoutcut. Great!
And I've got one question:
It got a set-up but the high e and h string slip out of the nut, how can i fix that? new nut or do i need a string tree? what would you do?
Im so stoked!

Re: Non Traditional Phantom Style Guitar
After playing it around 20 times at gigs i changed some small things.
Like i needed to get 2-4 mm wood off from the Body front, to get the hardware a little more in the proper direction.
That had some small issues with in:
-high e slipping out of the nut because of missing tension
-the pickup needed to have more distance to the strings
-bridge needed more room to be in the proper settings
-pickup was badly made (and changed)
-added bellycarve on the back and carve to have more ability to access the whole neck
Other than that it sounds and plays awesome.
Woodwork is actually already finished.
Paint will be this time glittery Gold with a added clear pick guard!.
Cant find good examples, but i think it will look awesome!
Pics will follow soon!
But in comparison i thin it should look similar to that:

Re: Non Traditional Phantom Style Guitar
The current State looks like:
Now she just needs a proper setup and maybe some polishing, an electronic Check and maybe a new pick guard because i think gold anodized would look awesome!? Or Cream?

Man, it looks well-gigged already! Very cool little guitar.
IMHO, gold anodized would look a bit too much, but cream is a safe bet that works every time.
Were those pot knobs lifted off an old Framus guitar? I have very similar ones on my BL-10

Re: Non Traditional Phantom Style Guitar
Those knobs come from a 70s Japanese SG Copy that was published under Vox/Voxtron.
They look perfect on that phantom, but surely i need more of them for my SG ..
Over the past 2 Years i played that phantom for around 25-30 Gigs as Maininstrument.
The Neck looks perfect atm.!

Re: Non Traditional Phantom Style Guitar
TADAAAA, THAT GUITAR IS FINISHED!!!
Electronic is fully working and the Setup seems fine to me.
Sounds like i wanted, snappy like a tele, but differently balanced.
I am really stoked how good that overwound Rickenbacker PU sounds!
