Sources for celluloid jaguar pickguards?

Post by Embenny » Mon Dec 19, 2016 10:13 pm

I'm putting together a vintage partscaster Jaguar, and have been looking for a (new) real, mint celluloid guard to put on it. There's a guy in Canada who made me an absolutely killer strat guard for my last project (the best new-production celluloid I have ever seen), but he doesn't do jags unfortunately.

On eBay, there seem to be some cheap Asian celluloid guards by a vendor named "overstocktoys", but that name doesn't inspire confidence in vintage accuracy, and the price of $75 US doesn't either. Has anyone seen one of these guards in the flesh, and were they the real deal? If not, do you have any suggestions for alternative sources?

This is going on a LPB (yellowed clear coat/kinda toward OTM) body and I really want to go with mint - if it was another colour I'd probably go spitfire.

Based on my research, I haven't found anyone making new mint celluoid guards. I saw that eBay listing as well but had the same doubts as you.

Who made the strat guard? Was it Lashing?

Hmmm, just as I feared. Perhaps I should try one "in the name of science" then!

The strat guard came from Groovy Guitars in Edmonton. It truly is a thing of beauty. It ruined PVC "mint" for me forever - the colour, the texture, the thickness - truly the ultimate for as big a Fender geek as myself.

Oh cool. I've seen this online as well. Glad it worked out so well for you.

Let us know if you test out the eBay guard.

Another option is just seeing if a vintage one comes for sale. Good prices can be had once in a while. In the mean time, you can a modern repro that is not celluloid. Fenderparts on eBay and Spitfire both do the best take on modern mint guard but it's not celluloid. Nothing really compares to the original though

Yeah, I actually went Spitfire for this project because I wanted the guard to match the degree of aging of the rest of the instrument...but those ebay guards still intrigue me!
