DocCarlson wrote:"Us nerds" indeed. Funny story, I keep most of my guitars at my parents' house and at one family function I decided to get out all of my black and white guitars I had at the time and set them up in the basement to gaze upon them: three (!) black/white/maple Strats of various vintage and manufacture, two black/white/matching headstock Jaguars, and a black/white/matching headstock Jazzmaster.mackerelmint wrote:And like I said, nobody but us nerds have a single fuck to give about that. If it were original, it would be kinda special, sure. But it's a refin.DocCarlson wrote:Also, SUNBURST is the safest, most boring option for a 1958 Strat! Let's keep context in mind here, black wasn't the standard for Strats 'til the '70s! A black Fender in the '50s or '60s is quite rare!
My grandmother came downstairs, looked at them, and asked with incredulity, "why would you buy six of the same guitar?!" All in the eye of the beholder, I guess... or something like that.
GRANDMAS!

Flake all the way! That blue sparkle, vintage drum like finish is always a winner.

Flake!
I love a black strat, but you have a fucking 58 that is a blank slate, waiting for a new lease on life.
You're an established artist with a style of your own. Why not make this one part of your world?
Metal. Fucking. FLAKE!!!!!!!

I normally like flake/sparkle with rosewood necks.
Don't do blue because then getting a Squier Super-Sonic blue would be redundant!
Do you have a picture of the stripped strat body to show that weird inlay work?

What if you did a 'black over sunburst' style finish? Then you'd have the burst peeking through a relic black refin. I've seen lots of those from the Fender CS.

I think you've fought the good fight as far as making it be vintage accurate, and you are just up against too much. You might as well make it be exactly the guitar you want it to be at this point, you aren't likely to sell it that I can see, and it'll serve you for years no matter what it looks like. Spend some time in your head, and decide what you want to see when you look at it, and let the rest of the world take care of vintage accuracy on other instruments.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I'm the lone burst vote, I love a good burst and I'm not afraid of woodwork to get it there... if it was MINE.
