Fixed!
I opened up the '58 and re-installed the original switch, which I mistakenly thought was incorrect. While I was in there, I went ahead and corrected the string grounds that I mistakenly "corrected" last week. I have been somewhat humbled by this '58, having previously assumed the earlier ones were pretty much the same as later examples. Anyway, everything is right now, and works perfectly.
Just for grins, I added a little bit of wear on the repro gold guard, to match the body (which has a bunch of dings and discoloration).
I really like this one! I played it last night until my arthritic old hands cramped up... which wasn't very long, by the way. It's pretty succulent...

Re: Fixed!
It's a good idea to have aged the gold pickguard there. It looks really nice!

Re: Fixed!
Glad to see her "fixed."
I've definitely learned a lot about 58-59 JMs from your purchase and posts about this guitar, and I'm sure others have as well. Thanks.

Re: Fixed!
Thanks guys... :)
There's a little faux wear near the Vol knob too... ;)
Oh, BTW... I took a peek inside the trem cavity when I had the strings off. The body is definitely 100% certain ash. The finish was not thick inside there and I could actually see the detail of the open-pore grain. That's pretty cool. I don't think the previous owner even realized it, or maybe just didn't realize the significance of it. There was no mention of it in his ad.
So blonde is def the original color of this JM!

Re: Fixed!
Looking good FP! Thanks for pointing out all those subtly different features of the earliest JM's. I think the wear you added on the plate is spot-on, looks just like it should.

It was vintage-spec'd, so it would work on a MIA. The same guy also produced the correct 9-hole '58/'59 guards... I wish I had one of those!

Re: Fixed!
No, I didn't. I heard these repro guards were supposed to have been pre-lacquered, but it didn't look like it when I sanded it.
I also have a MIJ gold guard on a project guitar I've been working on. The MIJ guard is ALOT thinner than the Scotland repros. I assume the Scots guard thickness to be authentic, but having never seen a real gold guard up close and personal... I don't know.

Re: Fixed!
By the way, I wanted to ask, now that you got both the MIJ gold guard and the scottish repro, how does the colors compare?? When I got the MIJ guard, I thought it looked very "yellow"... I also noticed that this "yellowness" did not come out on the digital photos I took.. Strange.fullerplast wrote: No, I didn't. Anyway, is the MIJ more yellow and the scottish guard more gold?? I have always thought that the original gold guards didn't have that much yellow in them.. But I also have yet to see one up close..
