I was waiting for someone to mention the fender mustang. IMO these are the best amps released in a long time, you can do anything with them, their light and their tone is amazing ! Please realize, this is coming from someone who loves tube amps as I own and have owned everything from old tweed, white, brown, blackface, silverface Fender products, Marshall, custom builds...I could go on forever.
These larger mustang amps, starting with the Mustang 3 cover everything and do it well.

Back in the early 90's I used to lug around a Crate G120CXL. It was stereo with reverb and chorus. The dirty channel was bad, but the clean was great by itself and with pedals.

I sometimes miss it, but then I remember how damn heavy that thing was. It was every bit as heavy as a Fender Twin.

i've been rocking my princeton chorus for the past few months while waiting to get my model t repaired. that said, i've grown to understand and appreciate the quirks of SS amps. I've thought about going with the ultra chorus (a 2x12 version) as a louder version/cheap alternative to the jc-120.

If vox would bring them back in a more robust version that cost a bit more, I'd probably hoard them.
This is an excellent rectangle

They made a 10" version, I always wanted to get a hold of that.

Anyways I've been using the blackstar core id, this thing is pretty incredible. I actually prefer the tone to the pathfinder.

Love my Fender Princeton Chorus! I use it as a home practice amp and honestly it works better than a tube amp for that purpose since it can still sound quite good at low volume. Beautiful clean channel, usable reverb, and I have actually had some fun with the overdrive channel. I also think I would like to have the ultra chorus one day, I don't think the Princeton could quite keep up with band volume. Hate the horrible crappy jacks that Fender used on all their solid state amps around that time though, absolute junk. However, that is the only problem I see with them, they seem to be built quite robust everywhere else.

I had a Roc Pro 1000 Head for a bit several years ago and I really liked it. Again, great clean channel and reverb and it had a beast of a dirt channel. Honestly, I would probably still be using that amp today if I could have just listened to my ears and not my mind saying "but its not a TUBE AMP".

the princeton chorus always had to be miked, and i'd use a little art tube preamp between the amp and pedalboard. i've entertained the idea of getting another one and use both live, mainly to take advantage of some stereo effects. i can find them under $150 all of the time, so i may wait for one that's in better shape than the one i have.

I'm looking around for a decent cheap solid state amp, and have been offered a Power Chorus and a Pro 185, both red knob types. They are both the same price; not knowing much about them, is either significantly better than the other? Good cleans and able to handle pedals would be a bonus. As would a headphone socket, I forgot to check... :-)

Without googling I am not too familiar with either of those models off hand. I would say go for whichever is rated the highest in watts if you plan to gig with it. Solid state needs a much higher power rating than tube amps to truly be loud enough for band situations. I have heard 100 watt solid state amps be compared to 30 watt tube amps in terms of output volume and I would probably agree.

I've always like the old Gallien Krueger stereo guitar amps from the 80's. I have the little GK250ML lunch box amp and a small rack setup with a 2000cpl preamp, cheap Alesis power amp and two home-built speaker cabs with 6.5 inch aluminum cone woofers. Stereo effects are from the built in Delay and Chorus and a TC Electronics Nova Delay.

I hope I haven't asked this already, but what are peoples opinions on the Vox valvetronix or valve reactor types?

Those old Vox SS are pretty cool. A SS amp that I'd like to get my hands on is a H&H IC100, Marc Bolan used them a lot. I think the Buzzcocks guy and Yngwie Malmsteen used em too.
