Ah, cool - thanks for that. So that rules that out then OP...DocCarlson wrote:The infamous "bulk pots" buy was of 1966 dated potsDespot wrote:Your pot codes say '64' ... but that could be explained through large bulk purchases of pots (didn't someone on here mention that a purchasing manager got fired for bulk ordering far too many 1meg pots). My '66 B&B Jazzmaster has '64 pots.

Isn't it very possible that along the way the owner just 'upgraded' the parts or bought some used replacement parts, which at the time would have been from early/mid 60s? I don't know the mentality of yore but that sounds quite understandable to me.

WOW!!! What a lucky find! This really is the stuff dreams are made of!
I really like the dark blue. And that tort pickguard is amazing. It's obviously a refin, but you might be able to clean up that old paint job for the time being.
This guitar has been loved, hated, used, abused and left for dead. It's your duty to show it some love and give it a second chance.
This is probably an early to mid '64. I have an early '64 JM with a DEC63 neck, early '64 pots and grey pickups.
I wouldn't be too turned off by the '66- neck plate. Its the only thing that jumps out as being 'wrong' for this guitar. Since the guitar has obviously been apart (probably a bunch of times) the plate is likely a replacement, either from a extra at a shop or a replacement from Fender, another guitar...who know. I wouldn't stress it. For $400 you're doing pretty good.
Do the pickups have any pencil dates on the underside?
Also - not likely to find a body date on a JM from this era.

if you really need an L series neck plate, they can be found on eBay $$$$
A spare vintage Kluson is easy to find as well.
get a new bone nut.
i really dig the halo the spaghetti decal left in the wood before it disappeared!
i've bought lots of vintage parts over the years and the 1st thing i would do was try and get the sh*t off of them- the dirt, the food, the organic material around the frets.... YUCK! this guitar needs some scrubbing too!
incredible find for $400, dude....

thats a steal!
clean it a bit up and see how it turns out, anyway its a really nice find.
hope you won't get serious illness while cleaning.
thought the year you'll see if the parts match year-wise together or not.
parts-caster dosnt seem to familiar to this one, dosnt it?
A '64 neck alone is worth more than 400 crit.

We need an OSG Jammy Git award - and you deserve to be the perpetual holder of that award OP!!
400 bucks! Wow.
This one deserves to get brought back to being playable at a minimum - and if you wanted to refinish/restore it, given how little it cost you you, it would give you a lot of leeway in how much you spend on that ... and you'd still be up on it!

I'd be tempted given the original cost to spend whatever is required to get it tip top; like you say, so much headroom to do so!

nice fking work, man.
dayum.
yeah, it's not "100% right" but for 400 dollars that's a legendary find, especially considering the circumstances.

Re: New to the forum with a big project in front of me..1964
The guitar appears black to me, not navy blue, but you're right that would be a killer look if I end up refinishing it. So far I've found both a single vintage kluson to make the original set whole, as well as ordering a set of relic'd Kluson reman replacements. I have also ordered a GraphTech Tusq XL nut for it. Is a bone nut going to make THAT big of a difference? I figured considering how important tuning stability is that a Tusq nut would provide a more slippery surface in the nut slots than bone. In any case, my plan is to clean all the decades of crap off of it, get rid of the rust, and make it very playable while cleaning and preserving the original parts that I need to replace to get it back operational. To my eyes, all of the wiring and pickups looks to be original, and yes, the pickups still work! I'll be the first to admit that I'm a little out of my element with this jewel in the rough, so if anyone has anything to add, please speak up. Thanks for all the replies, keep em coming!

Just don't be afraid to ask questions.
If I have one request (on behalf of OSG): Create a restoration thread with lots of pics!
