Re: Jazzmaster pickup comparison
Ok, so the GFS overwounds are incandescent... nice. I want to build a BURNER. But, the neck isn't reverse wound. So why can't I pull the lugs and flip the bobbin over? If I get creative with the leads... maybe resolder them from the inside, and notch the top half of the bobbin (now the bottom) it should fit in the cover, savy?
OR... What pup to go in the neck to get humbucking action in mid position and matchup to the GFS overwound? GFS suggest not needing the reverse wind to sound more vintage, but what use is this in an extreme overwind?
Peace, Carl

Re: Jazzmaster pickup comparison
I'm not sure how to find it at the moment, but there was a thread on the gfs hot pickups where someone did something to make them noise canceling in the mid position. I found it by looking up gfs jazzmaster pickups via google. It's on this site somewhere.

Re: Jazzmaster pickup comparison
I bought a pair of JM pickups from Mojo a couple of months back,
Here's the specs
1 Set of Black Bobbin Jazzmaster Pickups.
Correct length, Alnico 5 pole magnets.
Hand / Scatter wound with 42awg plain enamel wire.
Bobbins dipped in Nitro Cellulose.
Neck 8.3k ohm.
Bridge 8.8k ohm
Pre CBS 58-64
These are great sounding pickups, very retro sounding, with plenty of chime & twang with warmth added.

Re: Jazzmaster pickup comparison
Awesome work Green angel! This really helped me pick some pups for my newly acquired jazzmaster.
Just ordered some of the Lollars. To my ears they sounded clearer. Almost hi-fi.
Has anyone done a Jaguar pickup comparison like this on here?

Has anyone tried late-'70s Jazzmaster pickups? They're powerful enough to blast the doors off a barn, provided you're playing in a barn with doors.

Re: Jazzmaster pickup comparison
In my experience, Jaguar pickups from '73 to '75 are much louder and punchier than those from the '60s. Their very sharp nature most definitely cuts through a mix. At the same time, though, they make you miss the pleasant jangle of the earlier pickups. Just my 2 cents.otis wrote:I'm very curious for a Jaguar pickup comparison as well!deadringer wrote:

Re: Jazzmaster pickup comparison
Hi there !
I need a GRUMPY neck pickup for my jazzmaster !
I mean, I always feel that my neck pickup is a bit too soft, too silky, not raspy enough, know what I mean ?
Imagine a neck pickup that would have been designed by/for Link Wray if he had been a Jazzmaster user, that's what I want !
Any idea ?

This thread is unreal. I read this and listened to all the samples before I joined. Really impressive.

Re: Jazzmaster pickup comparison
It would be really interesting to have someone do this with string gauges. It would be tough to keep pickup/action height constant, but it would be interesting to hear real differences between 9s and 13s, keeping everything else constant.

Re: Jazzmaster pickup comparison
I'll have to post some mojo goldfoil and broadcaster samples in the near future. highly recommended pickup maker from the UK - but knowing myself, it will take forever. maybe better to just buy from the guy and not wait for my lazy ass.
