Oboe? Come now- I'd rather a clarinet or a bassoon, not their freaky offspring.Arthon wrote:Guitars are not cool. Synth and Oboe are better.

Re: Let's talk about guitars!
I have been trying to keep the number of guitars in the range of 10-12, and in the last year I have moved out a few, and bought a few to replace them. I have been itching big time for an ES 335 or Heritage H 535. I do have a semi-hollow that is truly great in every way - a 2003 Gibson ES 135 (pic below), somewhat rare odd ball model and I generally love those obscure variations of otherwise pretty common designs, but I still want an ES 335 or H 535.

Re: Let's talk about guitars!
An '80s SC2 w/ trem is probably the only specific guitar I think I need to own and don't at the moment. Well maybe a D'Angelico EX-175 too...
I'd really like to get it down to 10-12 or so "keepers" and a few project/fun guitars at any given time, and I'd been doing pretty decent on consolidating stuff down (one in replacing two or more out) until I added a Joan Jett MM this past weekend. I think I'm pretty solid in the assessment that it's very rarely about a real or perceived "need" for a particular instrument for me, it's about discovering and enjoying each individual instrument's unique qualities.

You know, I almost got one of those ES-135s. I think they are cool... is that not a full gloss finish, though?

You're right, they came in satin, but shortly developed a shiny spot in the "forearm rub" area. I gave it a bit of a polishing to even out the finish, and the back of the neck is really glossy - all from the playing. It's incredibly resonant and loud acoustically and overall plays great.Larry Mal wrote:You know, I almost got one of those ES-135s. I think they are cool... is that not a full gloss finish, though?

Re: Let's talk about guitars!
I'm in a really good place right now - my needs are essentially filled. Danocaster Strat, Road Worn Tele, Les Paul R8, 335, and a Gretsch 6120LTV that I absolutely adore.
Wants, on the other hand, never really subside. I've been GASing for a whole slew of things: some kind of electric 12-string, early 60's SG Special, 70's Ibanez Rocket Roll Sr, Korina Explorer, even a freaking Jackson Randy Rhoads of all things!

Re: Let's talk about guitars!
Prettymuch only had one guitar that ever really stuck around.
Back in the late eighties, I had a choice to get paid in this, or a gibson 330 with a repaired broken neck.
'61 Hofner Galaxie/175.....felt the flatwounds it had on it, & it was all over.
In the last few years I've retired her for something with better electronics & tuning stability, for recording my songs.
I'll probably never be able to spend more than 1k on a guitar, & new guitar necks/bodies rarely feel good to me.
Mid 80's MIJ fenders seemed a good place to start, & after trying a fair number of MIJ strats & teles,
My search has left me here on OSG's doorstep, all mewly & grabby.
I'll be finishing the setup on My first Jazzmaster very soon, an '86 MIJ with an untouched neck.
Thanx to OSG, it seemed like every image/word search ended here on this site.

Re: Let's talk about guitars!
I think there will always be stuff I really want, but I've gotten to the point now, ever since I bought my AV65 Jaguar, that I feel like until I'm a full time musician (probably never happen) I don't need any more guitars.
I have that Jaguar, tricked out versions of the VM Jaguar (lipsticks) and J Mascis Jazzmaster (Wide Range humbuckers), a partscaster made of a Classic Player Jazzmaster body with a Rhoney Starcaster neck, Timbo pickups, Staytrem bridge and AV65 trem and a Squier VI with upgraded pots and bridge/tremolo.
Things I want:
- Dream guitar is a LPB 1966 Jaguar
- Orginal Tele Deluxe w/ tremolo
- REISSUE Tele Deluxe w/ tremolo - I just tonight found out they reissued it as a Classic Player and can't find one anywhere. How is that possible? The original is really rare, but the fact they were making them like 3 years ago and I can't find a single one to grab is just stupid.
- Troy Van Leeuwen Jazzmaster - would do a great job of curing my lust for a 1966 offset for sure
- A Starcaster, new or original
- A Bilt Relevator LS in black with a B&B neck and matching headstock with a white guard and matching white headstock swoosh. Maybe some Lollar Regals in it?
- A competition Blue Mustang
- Alpine White Les Paul Custom
- First Run SG faded w/ the moon inlays
- Non-reverse Firebird
Can't think of much else really. I look at those guitars pretty much every day online, but I've decided that I won't get anything else until I get rid of some of the stuff I already have. The only problem there though is that everything I have came from a very specific idea that I had and aside from the AV65, were created to serve very specific purposes. TL;DR, I love all of my guitars. That doesn't even take into account the amount of money that's gone into them that I'd have to eat if I wanted to sell something. It's put me in kind of a weird position that I can't really say is bad because obviously it's saving me money, but still there are just so many awesome guitars out there. I feel kind of stupid owning as many as I do. Just the idea of collecting guitars is goofy to me. Blah blah blah they're meant to be played, you've all heard it before, but it really rings true.

Re: Let's talk about guitars!
Really I could get by with Tele, JM, Casino and "Jazzbox."
I currently have an AV 69 Thinline Tele, Classic 60s Lacquer JM, and Univox Coily (which pushes my Casino buttons). I'm looking to add a Jazzbox but honestly my Tele does jazz very very well, and anything I could afford right now wouldn't be as nice, so it's not a necessity.
Someday I would like to have vintage examples of each of the above guitars, but that's more for wish fulfillment than utility.
Oh, I also have a cheap Epi nylon string. I see no purpose in upgrading that. It's just for fun.
And in my house there is a nice mid-priced Martin, a Mexican "Fender Squier Series" Strat with upgrades, and Gibson Les Paul Special. I can borrow those any old time.
