Beautiful and Ugly guitars.

Post by frelonvert » Thu Jun 11, 2015 3:59 am

I don't know if it is the same for you, guys... but sometimes my eyes falls on a guitar and I can't decide for sure if I find it incredibly beautifull or absolutely ugly.
I know that it is a matter of tatse, but I thought it could be fun to share.

First example: Yamaha vg guitar.

It's funny. I've been thinking this for a while about the Firebird III*

It looks amazing here. Absolutely drop-dead gorgeous...

....but then I see a picture like this....

Image

...and I start thinking it looks gonky, ugly & disproportionate! The pickguard in particularly gives my eyes real problems.

There must be something wrong with me!! :fp:

Yeah, I'm the same way with the non-reverse Firebirds. I can't decide if I like or hate the way they look.

For me it's the old Guild Bluesbirds from the '60s and '70s, I honestly have no idea whether I like them or not. I think it's got something to do with the proportions of the body or the positioning of the controls, although to be fair I'd be lying if I said that the cringeworthy name wasn't a big factor as well.

The recently announced Teisco Spectrum reissues (and really all similar Japanese guitars of that era) are like that for me.

They're definitely cool, but I can never really decide if I really like the way these types of guitars look. I think I probably don't, because I look at the price and think "what?!" and I also try to think what my reaction would be if Fender made a guitar like that, and I'm sure I'd be freaking out about it. But I'd still love to have one, for some reason.

Speaking of which, there's always this old classic:

It took me a while but at some point I did decide that those were beautiful.

the one fender guitar that i think of is the swingster:

i mean it is pretty ugly. at the very least it's weird looking, but at the same time it looks pretty damn cool.

i played my brother's green Performer last weekend when i was in mexico city and MAN that guitar REALLY rocks!!!

i feel weird about Gibson's RD guitars. they're ugly but still kinda classy hot.

and some of them FirstAct guitars, too...
i love delay SO much ...that i procrastinate all the time.

these have always drawn me in, then pushed me away:

I think it's mainly the control plate. The rest of the design is well proportioned and graceful.

That Maton Wedgtail is sooooo close to being awesome. I can't help wonder if it would work better if the horns were symmetrical (like the bottom horn). The bigsby works really well on it.
