The 70s Telecaster Customs of OSG (and famous users)
ok i'm terribly in love with my new '74 Tele Custom, even though it's been eaten up by wood worms!
the sound between the 2 pups is immense but amazing, and the middle position -for once!- is really useable, too.
of course it sounds better with some overdrive or fuzz, but still, very very useful. i'm not a big fan of the bridge pup's clean sound quack, but i could get used to it, too.
i've wanted and looked for the right one of these for over a decade now, and i'm psyched i finally found it. yes it'll need some work and i'll have to be a bit more gentile with it so it won't desintegrate, but no regrets or anything like that at all.
so... who else here on the OSG is (or was?) a Tele Custom player.
again, it's the ones with the WRHB in the neck.
IF you had one and sold it, why?
who are the famous players?
i come to think of keith richards (even used one to beat a fan up, iirc) and dave pirner of soul asylum.
oh and the great crispian mills of kula shaker.
who else?
let's join the happy party of these amazing bastards/hybrids --- a total WIN for fender i say, even though haters will (and do) hate.
bring it on!
(good pics of mine once it stops raining...)

Congrats on the new guitar, I love Tele Customs as well! There something about this pickup config that just works really well. I love the balance and versatility between the pickups, it also sounds extremely good with a fuzz pedal. In addition to Richards Thom Yorke and the Edge come to mind as Custom players. Also here's a pic of me with the Tele Custom I used to own and my Zaftig, which was inspired by my Tele Custom.

I've been to one World's Fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing i ever heard come out a pair of headphones.

I have a '99 Mex Reissue with a Creamery in the neck and some other bootek PU in the bridge position. It's kinda my favorite guitar because it sounds and plays just P-E-R-F-E-C-T. Sad statement on OSG, I know
I just love the layout of these! I'm looking for a 70's original, but I doubt I'd find a better one than my reissue...

Here's mine: it's a 1986 MIJ custom. It now has a Lollar Regal in the neck, and a Lollar Special T in the bridge. Also, I changed the original bridge saddles for steel compensated saddles, I think they're Rutters or something. Pretty good guitar, albeit a bit on the heavy side for a tele.

It's kind of crept in there as my favourite guitar in terms of looks lately - lots of nice ones in this thread. Can't wait to finish off my project Custom! Gonna try to wind something interesting to replace the RI WRHB guts.
I don't think they really caught on in their time, so not too many players picked them up. More seemed to dig on the Deluxe and Thinline Deluxe. Something about have that Tele bridge and pup as well as a humbucker in the neck just seems like the perfect combo to me.

Man all of these look super cool! The Lollar Regal and Special T is a dynamite combo for this setup!

I had one of the reissues for a while... Was only ever my backup guitar though, and I never really bonded with it to any great extent.

nice ones! i'm just wishing it hat a vibrato (bigsby or the hag tailpiece above look interesting!), but might add that later, maybe.
i used to own an 80s MIJ one too, but it was pretty lifeless, somehow. my '74 is pretty light (might be the hollow spaces of the wood worms?!) and very resonant.
better saddles might be a good option too...
keep 'em coming!

I think the tax man killed the dream even before the honeymoon ended. It was sad. So sad.DocCarlson wrote:What the hell, dude? Yep, sucked, had to raise fast cash.
Without totally derailing pat's thread, it's only been 6mos and I'm already having a hard time remembering how serious the situation was.
Let that be a lesson those of you who still have your Customs, don't sell them to cover taxes.
Go to jail instead.
