You people all have incredible memories. I got my first guitar in '97, never sold one, and couldn't tell you even what years I bought the rest of my collection. Except for 2016 because I've only bought one... so far. How do you do it???

^As someone stated before: autism.

Lemme try:

- mid 80s: Yamaha superstrat copy, sold to a friend in the late 80s. campfire guitar, probably lost.
- late 80s: 64 Jaguar, stolen in mid 90s. another 64 Jag, traded in for a 64 JM a few years ago, still own it. US standard strat, stolen soon after.
- early 90s: 2 Mustangs (69-70 CAR competition stripe, 60s bastard), sold soon after.
- early-mid 90s: 63 JM (still own it)
- late 90s: 70s 4001 Rickenbacker (sold around 2005), some CIJ Jag (sold immediately).
- 2000-now: some lawsuits (Greco/Tokai/Ibanez 335s, strats, teles) - all sold, lots of parts guitars, mostly JMs, new and old, several incarnations. Some cheaper basses.
- still here: 62 parts JM, 63 & 64 orig JMs, recent-parts JM (inspired by Doug/Fullerplast's maple neck NoMaster), 70s Aria JM copy, two acoustics.

I think these are the main ones.

[edit] forgot a 70s sunburst strat... stolen in the 90s.
Nobody exists on purpose.

Mine is much less interesting than others above, but here goes:

Early '90s "ZZ Top" brand strat copy - sold to a friend (sorry, friend)
Early '90s Yamaha F-310 acoustic - loved this guitar and lost it somewhere??
Early '90s Les Paul copy - hated this guitar and lost it somewhere
1996 Fender Strat - bought new in Dublin and sold in Florida in 2006
Late '90s Seagull acoustic - no idea what happened to this
2005 Fender Telecaster Deluxe MIM - bought in Florida, sold to a friend in 2013 (hope you're still loving it!)
Mid-2000s Martin Custom Shop acoustic - sold to pay deposit on flat. I miss this guitar.
1971 Fender Mustang Competition Stripe - bought in 2010 and sold last year. Biggest regret selling this.
1972 Fender Thinline Telecaster - favourite guitar. Bought in 2012 and still got her.
1975 Gibson Marauder - bought and sold last year - not for me
2003 Mosrite The Ventures MIJ - bought and sold last year, also not for me
201X Squier JMJM - bought and sold in a year and regretted selling
1977 Gibson Les Paul Special Double Cut - bought last year and still got it

There are probably a few I've forgotten about, but of those I still have my Thinline Telecaster and my Les Paul Special. I'm desperately searching for a black AVRI Jazzmaster at the moment - once I have that I reckon I'll be about happy.

I honestly cannot do this list. there was a year where I bought 12 guitars and sold them all 2-3 years later. I've always chosen quantity over quality for some reason that doesn't even make sense to me.
I can tell you my 1st guitar was purchased by my grandmother for me from a Fingerhut catalog. It was a Synsonics w/ built in amp/speaker
Then in '96 I got a Lotus LP copy.
then a Dano U2, some japanese J bass copy, a Jag-stang, a no-name Les Paul recording copy, and i think that brings me up to '00. After that I honestly can't remember.
I can list SOME of the guitars I've owned since them.
Monterey 335, Epi Dot Studio, Japanese SG, Taylor acoustic, Ibanez Sound gear bass, Epi SG Proline, Epi SG Goth(set neck), mij Strat, Squier VM Jag, Luna Athena, Japanese guitar called a Saturn, Dean Rhapsody bass, Squier Cyclone, ibanez art120, Schecter Ultra Prototype, ltd viper, Fernandes Vertigo, another Epi dot Studio, HNB's "Lilith" jagmaster, MIK P bass, hondo P bass, Squier bass vi, Ovation Super slim, applause super slim, then i've owned about 3 teisco/ and some other random bits I can't remember.
and i have a casio dg-10 if that counts ;)
my newest guitar is an unfinished project. will update when closer to completion.
What is acoustic? Oh, you means a grandpa's guitars? A grandpa's guitars? That's for pussies and grandpas. I think you know it.

Let's see...

1 - Jakim - offset, bizarre argentine guitar I've got from my dad's friend (I was about 10 at the time?). - This one is still at my parents house, currently in an unplayable state.
2 - Ibanez - A red RG (I think?) series - sold it to a high school friend. Another friend told me he bought it from him some years ago and he plays it.
3 - Ibanez Jem - The blue one with handle. And flowers. Sold it back to the same shop I bought it from after 2 or 3 years.
4 - Another Ibanez, a white one that played nicely. Sold it.
5 - Moved to the US and bought a Epiphone Broadway from the 60's. It was under a grand. Sold it eventually to buy an SG.
6 - Parker Fly Deluxe - in white. This one stayed with me for a while. Sold it a few years ago.

Let's see if I can pull this off:

2001: random acoustic. Took guitar as an elective my freshman year of HS. I think it went up in a bonfire at one point.
2001: Squier Bullet. Xmas gift! Smashed in an emo fit over a breakup, probably 2007?
2002: Aria acoustic to replace the first one. No clue where this went to.
2003: Epiphone Firebird. Store had a '72 Mustang for about the same price. 16 year old me didn't know any better. Traded the Firebird to Pat at one point.
2006?: Squier VM Tele Custom. Two HB version. Still have the body, neck is currently on my partscaster.
2009?: Aria LP Special copy. Acquired from Pat in the Firebird trade. Added a bigsby, and sold it at a later point.
2011: Squier Standard Jagmaster. Bought it from someone on here. Decided I wanted a more proper-ish JM, sold the body.
2013: Partsmaster! Jagmaster neck, got a modded VM Special body and AVRI pickups on here. My current no.2.
2015: Partsquire. Had so much fun putting the JM together that I decided to do an Esquire. My no.1.

Next project is probably giving new life to the Tele Custom. New neck and pickups.

Man, some of the dates in this thread is making me realise how little experience I actually have...

2004- Yamaha EG-112C Black/Rosewood: Christmas gift from my parents. Your basic Wal Mart cheapo Strat, came with a tiny amp as well. First riff I ever learned was Iron Man, gave me a REAL basic idea of how power chords worked. Still own it to this day, tried upgrading and modifying but... ehhh... it's just not a well-made instrument. I keep it around for sentimental reasons.

2005- Epiphone G-310 Vintage White: Once it became clear to my parents that I'd outgrown the cheaper stuff, the next Christmas, I got this bolt-on SG and a solid state Crate half stack. This one would become my primary instrument for the next five years, starting with learning Nirvana and Green Day riffs in the bedroom, and eventually working my way up to starting a band and playing talent shows. By that time, I was a Sophmore in High School and I was trying to work out how to shred. First solo ever played successfully was Eagleheart by Stratovarious. Like the Yamaha, it's not a great instrument. Not something I play all that often, I also just keep it for sentimental reasons... also who the hell is gonna buy it?

2010- Jackson JS-32T Warrior Black: First guitar I ever bought on my own... it was with graduation money from grandparents, but, still. Bolt on, Indonesian made, cheap. It's not great, but once I upgraded the pickups it started sounding real nice. It plays well, but, it is a cheaply-made instrument, so the parts aren't quite as durable. I keep it as a backup.

2012- LTD ST-213FM Road-worn Black: This one was a failed project. I wanted hum cancelling single coils in a Floyd-equipped strat. This guitar had the Floyd already, so all that was left was the pickups. I dunno if I just got a bad one or if I was just no good with Floyds, but I couldn't keep this thing in tune at all. Not to mention, with the singles, it didn't sustain very well either. Had pretty lovely tone, though, especially clean on position 4 (neck/mid) Wound up selling it.

2013- Ibanez RG7321 Black: My first and only seven string, upgraded with Dimarzio pickups. Not a bad instrument, I'm just not as into 7's as I used to be. I keep it for certain songs. One cool thing I did with it, though, was I bought a Green Mirror pickguard to put on it. Makes it stand out pretty nicely.

2013- Ibanez Premium RG Sapphire Blue on Quilted Maple: This one's an example of "I had to, cos where else was I going to get one for this price." I bought this used at the local Guitar Center. These things ran for around a grand or so when they came out, and, becos whoever owned it before was an idiot and shoddily installed some EMGs into it and raised the action up to high-heaven, (and I guess cos, no matter how "premium" it is, it's still Indonesian) they dropped the price all the way down to $199.99! I couldn't pass it up. Plus it has the Edge Zero- the only floating trem I can work with! It's another backup, and what I use if I ever need the occasional dive-bomb.

2015- LTD Deluxe EC1000VB Duncan- Now my primary instrument. A lovely satin-black Eclipse with aged-white binding and gold hardware. Looks great, and feels great, the neck is exactly the way I like it- 42mm nut width, c-shaped neck profile, generous radius, perfect for someone with small hands like me (and the Gibson-scale helps). All mahogany, duncan JB/59 set, set neck. Best tone, and best sustain of any guitar I own. I take the most care of this one.

No offset in this list, you might notice. WORKING ON IT!

Sometime in the late '90s - 'Pacific' acoustic. I didn't claim it for myself until later, though. It's a roughly 000-sized Australian-made guitar from the late '40s or early '50s that my dad picked up at a garage sale for $1 or $2. It's an absolute POS, the frets aren't even properly spaced. Dad knew it was a shitty guitar but we strung it up anyway. It looks cool. It's a good decoration.

2005 - Valencia classical guitar. A gift from dad, when I started having lessons at 12-13. It was basically the cheapest acoustic guitar you could get but it was fine to learn on. It still gets played whenever I'm visiting the parents.

2007 - Squier Standard Strat, which came with a little amp. Good guitar, horrible, shitty little amp. Still have the guitar.

2008 - Ibanez acoustic-electric. I'm not sure of the model number - it's a mid-range dreadnaught with a cutaway. Still have it.

2009 - Epiphone Thunderbird bass. I got it because it looked cool. It still looks cool. I might sell it eventually and get something short-scale, though.

2012 - Fender American Special Telecaster. My first proper big boy guitar. It's in my lap right now.

2014 - Aria Diamond 1212. That might not be the actual model number. Just something I saw on a forum. it's a fully-hollow electric 12, basically a poor man's Vox Ultrasonic. I've recorded with it a few times but it doesn't get played all that much.

2015 - I got into synths.......

1976 Takamine F430 Still Have.
From my dad who obtained it in the seventies, first guitar, keeping it despite not being a fan of the tone/neck.

1968 Yamaha FG-260 Twelve String Still Have.
Another one from my dad, laminate top but sounds ok, plays marginally well despite poor neck setting, sentimental value means keeping it.

Jay Turser Spirite Sold.
First elec., had funky adjustable nut and shape. Swapped the neck single coil for a rail. Sold it to some guy in college, found it a few months later in a shop, didn't buy it back (wish I did.)

Takamine Jasmine Acoustic Gave to Dad.
Christmas present, not really an upgrade from the F430 I'd been using, a very cheap guitar that I hauled everywhere... Got thrown in campfires etc., eventually the electronics quit and developed a horrible rattle, loose brace? In my father's custody at the moment.

Epiphone EB-0 Sold.
Bought because of FLCL and just to have a bass... Not for me. Fragile construction, muddy tone (not what I wanted), non-versatile pickup selection... Sold (don't even remember who/where,) wish I still had to place on the wall.

Cort Curbow 4 Gave away.
Ridiculous looking lucite bass, played horrible without a (not kidding) 1cm shim in the neck. Used in my band, left it with the singer when I departed under slight ill circumstance...

1996 Fender Jaguar Still have.
Present from my parents, of course I'm not ridding myself of it.

Schecter Omen Traded for work.
Just bought to mess around with wiring tricks, had a bunch of crazy series/parallel/split switches. Traded to someone in exchange for wiring a few guitars.

Gibson The Paul II Sold.
Really wanted a Les Paul with my first paycheck, accidentally (?) overdrew my account for it. Super thin Les Paul with a contour, immediately sank more money into it for a fret level, realized I preferred Fender style guitars so wound up rid of it, don't miss it immensely but cool guitar.

Seventies Generic Hawaiian Brand Acoustic Sold/Given Away.
Sister gave me an old acoustic with bellying and broken tuners. Did some rudimentary repair and gave/traded it to a friend in need, I don't in all honesty remember why.

1966 Fender Mustang Still have.
Built with a friend for the most part, not getting rid of it even though I don't always gel with it.

Mitchell MD-100S12 Still have.
Friend (somewhat stupidly) bought it new with a huge crack in the top that delaminated over time, left it with me. Finally got it repaired a bit back, play a lot.

Squier 51 Sold.
Bandwagon guitar. Literally played it about five times before I realized didn't need it, sold. But everyone had to have one of these...

TeleMaster, Self Built Still have.
Every once in a while my most played axe, too unique for me to get rid of (for a few reasons.)

Squier '70s Jazz Bass Still have.
Well I needed a bass after giving my prev. one away... Very nice, love it.

Squier Jazzmaster Still have.
Traded an amp to a forum member here, stupid trem but once that was resolved, one of my favorite guitars.

1993 Yamaha RGZ112p Still have.
My wife wanted it, never played it. After gluing it back together (!) still a nice playing guitar, ridiculously hot.

Breedlove Discovery (x2 , maple, mahogany) Still have.
Bought two because I kept second guessing myself about which was better. Had a bunch of dumb warranty claims and claims with an eBay seller. Kept both.

Daisy Rock Heartbreaker Artist Sold.
Bought to mess around with for a week and sell. Really, can't imagine someone having this as a beginners guitar, good in some ways but ridiculously uncomfortable.

Jackson SLX Still Have.
Wanted a soloist for some odd reason. I was right that I would, fucking awesome. Hate to say it, but if I got rid of all my other guitars... I wouldn't mind this one being the keeper.
King Buzzo: I love when people come up to me and say “Your guitar sound was better on Stoner Witch, when you used a Les Paul. “...I used a Fender Mustang reissue on that, dumbass!

Best of my fuzzy memory;

late 70's Global JC Penney guitar. No idea what happened to it.
'73 Gibson SG Special. Traded it on a...
'83 Ibanez Roadstar II... Traded it on a...
'78 Les Paul Standard. Sold it for $50 profit.
early 90s Washburn D12. Traded toward a '73 Fender Super Reverb
'92 Epiphone Sheraton. Sold it, broke even to fund the Ric 330.
'91 Gibson SG Jr. Don't remember what happened to it.
'66 Fender Musicmaster, sold it, bought it back last year.
'65 Fender Duo-Sonic. Traded it for a Shure SM58 & ca$h.
'90 Ric 330/6 sold it like a dumbass.
'06 Ric 360/6. Still own it.
'10 G&L ASAT Special. Still own it.
'10 Squire VM Jag Bass. Still own it.
'13 Epi Masterbilt Acoustic. Still own it.
'13 Epi 335 Dot Royale. Still own it.
'14 Gibson SG Standard. Still own it.
'14 Fender 60s Baja Tele. Still own it.
'15 Fender 60s Laquer Jaguar. Still own it.

Let's see if I can remember them - no hope of getting the order right:

Starting out (1997-1999):
Legend Jazz bass copy in sunburst - first cheapo bass, still have it, de-fretted, re-sprayed and with better electronics.

Godin SD bass - first "proper" bass. love the neck, but replaced the body with a standard P body. Still my main bass for those rare occasions I gig.

Tanglewood Jetstream guitar - first guitar. Donated it to a friend, who donated it to another friend, who I believe still has it.

The eBay years (2000-2005):
Squier Venus guitar - first eBay purchase - still have it, still play it.

Yamaha BEX4 bass - sold it last year

Fender bitsa Jazz bass - MIJ '75 neck, American body and pups. Never could get the neck set up to my liking, but sold it to a guy who loved it.

Warmoth bitsa Jazz bass - started with a Warmoth body, Moses graphite neck, Bill Lawrence pickups. Then had a Warmoth neck. Now it's a Fender neck (with graphite rods) and DiMarzio pickups.

Stagg Tele copy - nice neck, horrible body, rubbish hardware. Was going to strip it and upgrade everything. Never managed. Still got the bits.

Warmoth Telecaster - The antics with the Stagg led me to buying a Warmoth body, but the Stagg neck didn't fit it, so I ended up getting another neck and various other bits. Still got it.

Squier Bronco bass - sold it recently to a mate.

Epiphone EB0 bass - was a present from a bandmate, and I ended up loaning it back to him, not sure what happened to it.

Tanglewood Scorpio bass - strange short-scale bass seemingly cobbled together from a number of elements, which I ended up selling to the same bandmate.

Canadia (2005-2006)
Fender 1965 Mustang - I lived in Canada for a few months, and bought this as a project to do up an play. It's a refin with a number of un-original parts. Brought it home with me and still have it.

Squier PJ bass - left it in Canada when I came home, having told my ex-gf to donate it to someone. She ended up giving it to the kid who worked in the coffee shop. Make of that what you will.

GAS abatement (2006-2009)
Ibanez SZ320 guitar - With the benefit of hindsight, I've no idea why I wanted this guitar, but when I came back from Canada, I really wanted something set-neck and humbuckery, and this seemed to fit the bill. It didn't. Sold it last year.

Girlfriend isn't helping (2009-present)
Lakland Skyline Decade bass - wandering round Newcastle, I spotted one of these in Guitar Guitar and liked the look of it. "I totally can't justify a new bass, especially not one that's over a grand", said I. "But if you like it, and you can afford it, why not?" said my gf, not for the last time. The one in Newcastle weighed a ton, but Kenny's Music in Dunfermline also had one (for 1p less than a grand). Still have it, love it - it's my "best" bass.

Squier VM Fretless Jazz - turns out I'm not enough of a fretless player to justify it over my original defretted cheapo jazz. Sold it on.

Fender MIM Thinline telecaster - Had an urge for a Lake Placid Blue guitar. Nice as it is, I don't play it much, and it's the next one out, when I get round to selling it.

Gibson Standard SG Bass - at a wedding in Manchester with my gf, saw a nice SG bass in Dawsons. "I totally can't justify a new bass, especially not one that's over a grand", said I. "But if you like it, and you can afford it, why not?" said my gf. I didn't buy it. Instead when I got back up to Glasgow, I happened to walk into Guitar Guitar where they had just got the slightly less luxurious version in, second hand. Bought that one instead. Still got it. It's really lightweight.

Gretsch G5420 (Aspen Green) Idly looking round guitar shops with the gf again. "That's a nice colour, and it's a proper guitar shape" says she. "Yeah, it's nice. But I totally can't justify a new guitar", etc, etc. Yeah. Still got it. Play it lots.

Charvel Surfcaster bass For the first time in years, I bought an instrument off eBay. Always wanted one but never ever saw one. Was quite surprised to win the auction. However, If I need to sell a bass at any point, this'll be the first out.

Squier Bass VI Was looking round guitar shops with the gf, yadda yadda. Still got it - the main thing I play just now.

Revelation 12-string JM Lots of fun.
Kenny

Ok, my guitars are mostly cheap in comparison, and I only started playing in 2007, I tend to modify rather than get rid of them most of the time.

2007 - Yamaha Pacifica 012 Strat copy. My first guitar, tried changing pickups and electronics on it and still was not satisfied, was rarely played when I got my first fender, gave it away to my nephew to learn on. (gave away)

2008 - Seagull Entourage Acoustic. Never bonded with it, hated the neck. (Sold)

2010 - MIM fender SSH Strat. I tried a lot of MIM strats in different shops until I found one I really liked. This one is still with me, I swapped the pickups for Seymour Duncan SSL-1 vintage, and the bridge for a JB humbucker, changed the electronics for series/tap/parallel of the bridge JB and the front tone for both SSL-1, rear tone for the bridge, blocked the tremolo with a piece of hard aged redwood. The guitar sounds amazing and feels great. Still with me and still my #1. (Still have it)

2010 - Ibanez Bass R?? that I got from a pawn-shop very cheap. This was just for trying bass out and it was a really crappy instrument. I sold it for a slight profit when I got my Bass VI. (Sold)

2005 Used Taylor 110e Acoustic-electric (bought in 2012). In 2005 Taylor was still making these entry level guitars in the USA, they moved their production to Mexico a few years later. The guitar was a little dull sounding at the beginning even with new strings, until I discovered this was due to a badly cut bottom of the saddle by the previous user. I made a new bone saddle for it myself, cut a new bone nut for it and now it sounds really great. Great strumming guitar. (Still have it)

1965 Valco Airline Lap Steel. Purchased in 2013. The Valco string through pickup sounds AMAZING, I thought about installing a pickup like this in my other guitars. I think this lap steel had been rarely played given its great state. I could change the tuners for better ones but feel bad about replacing anything that has been there since 1965. (Still Have it)

2013 Troy Van Leeuwen Jazzmaster. I tried this one in a store on a whim and instantly fell in love. I have only changed the pickguard to a mint green one and the rhythm circuit switch to the traditional type of switch (see my avatar). I love everything about this guitar, AVRI 65 pickups it comes with are great, bridge works great, neck is just perfect for me. Definitely will keep this for a long time. (Still have it)

2014 Squier VM Bass VI. I instantly bonded with this instrument, but still changed the bridge for a wide Staytrem, cut a new bone nut for it, installed a half a degree shim on the neck joint, changed the mini pots for quality full pots, installed LaBella strings, got a SeakyT real celluloid tort pickguard. It is a really great instrument now. The tinkerer in me is still contemplating on putting Roadhouse bass VI pickups on it, will probably do it. I call this my The Cure machine. (Still have it)

2015 - While visiting my country, Paraguay, I bought (in the town of Luque where most guitars are made by hand in Paraguay) a ridiculously cheap nylon string classical guitar (I think I paid 60 or 70 dollars), just for the heck of it. The setup was horrible, frets where rough and the finish quality leaves a lot to be desired. The funny thing is that it sounds really great. Turns out it was made with all solid woods (Mostly Cedar and Spruce, I had a long conversation with the craftsman that made it), top, sides and rear are all solid and relatively thin, bone nut and saddle. It has a tremendous sound, really resonant, with singing sustain, booms in my chest far more than my Taylor. Really a surprise. I would say it is much more of a fingerpicker than a strummer guitar. So I decided to tinker with it, I changed the crappy tunners for waverly's, installed a K&K piezo pickup, sanded the bone nut and saddle to lower the action how I liked it, sanded leveled and crowned the frets myself (quite the learning experience), sanded the finish off of the back of the neck and applied some lemon oil (really smooth now), and installed some great quality nylon strings. Lo and Behold, this guitar sounds and plays amazing now. The finish is still crappy but the sounds it produces is really something else. I use it as my beater, take it to the beach, try song ideas. I find myself playing it all the time, and I love the feeling of connection to my home country I get from it. (Still have it)

I'm at over 200. I do have a spreadsheet with serial numbers, purchase dates, sell dates, price paid, price sold for, etc.

I'll divide it into guitars & basses

Guitars:

2005: 1970's Yamaha Classical Guitar: loaned it from a friend, until I got a guitar from my own. AFAIK, he still has it.
2005: 2004 Squier Standard Fat Stratocaster (Pewter Grey): still have it, albeit in a disassembled state.
2006: 2005 Stagg Dreadnought acoustic guitar with plasticoated fretboard: I bought it on holiday in Greece (Thessaloniki). Dreadful guitar, but clung onto it until 2011, when I donated it to welfare.
2006: 2003 Epiphone Wildcat (Turqoise), with the Epiphone- Bigsby: Very nice guitar, but heavy, and the P90's didn't speak to me, traded it against a Korean-made Epiphone Dot (cherry) a year later.
2006: 2004 Squier Telecaster Custom I: nice guitar, modded the bridge with a humbucker-telebridge to give it more the look of a real Custom. Sold it in 2008 for a Fender Classic '60 Telecaster (white).
2006: 197x Fender Partsmaster Stratocaster (Dakota Red): partsmaster with various bits and pieces from the seventies, and a new neck. I still own this monster today (with it being unsellable).
2006: 2006 Fender Classic '60 Telecaster (Candy Apple Red): my first real Telecaster, and a very nice guitar. I added a Bigsby B5 unit to it in 2007, then I didn't like it anymore, and sold it in 2008.
2007: 1994 Epiphone G400 "SG": My first trip with my parents car (I just got my drivers license) to pick it up in Holland. Clung onto it until 2010, when I sold it.
2007: 1995 Epiphone Dot "Cherry": got traded against the Epiphone Wildcat: amazing guitar, but with a thin and narrow neck. Sold it in 2010.
2008: 2005 Gretsch G5236 Pro Jet: My first "Gretsch", and while a looker, the minihumbuckers stunk, and it weighed a ton. Sold it the same year. It re-appeared at a friends place 6 months ago.
2008: 2008 Fender CIJ Jazzmaster (sunburst): My first real offset, clung onto it until 2012, when I sold it. I will own a sunburst JM again in the future, they're way too cool to be ignored.
2008: 2007 Fender Classic '60 Telecaster (Olympic white): my goal of being Robbie Robertson/Steve Cropper. It's my no1 guitar, and I still have it today.
2008: 2001 Keiper acoustic 12-string guitar. My first decent acoustic 12-string. Sold it in 2012 when I noticed it started collecting dust. Had the strings reversed in Rickenbacker-fashion.
2009: 2004 Gibson SG Standard: bought it secondhand, added a Maestro Vibrola, and could trade it against a what turned out to be 1969 Gibson SG (also with a Vibrola) in 2010.
2010: 1969 Gibson SG Standard: traded it against the 2004 Standard, then sold it for a nice profit.
2010: 1962 Gibson LG-0 acoustic guitar: amazing little mahogany guitar, with the very rare "stinger" headstock, in a mint condition. Sold it in 2012: the one that got away.
2011: 1977 Martin D35: my first grown-up true acoustic A-brand guitar. It had the name, it had the mojo, but it played like a trainwreck and sounded thin and uninspired. Sold it the same year.
2011: 1999 Rickenbacker 370/12 "Mapleglo": my cure for my 1960's sound-fetish. Amazing guitar, amazing sound, amazingly narrow neck that was unplayable in the end. Traded it for a 1964 Gibson EB2.
2012: 1987 Sigma SDR-35: the carbon-copy of the Martin, but way better. Thin top, scalloped forward-shifted bracing and a huge sound. Still own this guitar today, but planning to sell it.
2012: 1964 Harmony H74: bought it as a project for cheap on evilbay: restored it and sold it for a profit the same year.
2014: 2014 Gretsch G5420T "Aspen Green": technically the guitar of the Missuhs, but hey, we share our collection. Got traded last week against a Guild Starfire III (Newark Street).
2015: 2013 Sigma 000R-28VS: 50/50 purchase between me and the Missuhs, amazing guitar, and my no1 go-to when it comes to acoustic noodling. Still have this one.
2015: 1994 Epiphone Sorrento "Vintage Sunburst": very nice hollowbody electric guitar, with woody P90's. Still have this guitar today, but it might come redundant in the future.
2016: 2011 Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster Custom: from the Missuhs, but I found it, and urged her to buy it. Will be transformed with a maple-cap neck, and better hardware. Still have this one.
2016: 2016 Guild Starfire III "Newark Street", traded it against the G5420T. Thinner, better sounding and better built (albeit made in the same factory as the Gretsch), this one will stay!

Basses

2008: 2008 Squier Affinity Bronco Bass "Black": my first bass to learn it on, then I was smitten, and I turned bassplayer
2009: 2004 Fender "Highway 1" Jazz Bass: turned out to be a refurbished and tweaked Squier, that got me alerted big time (cost me a lot of money) and made me study Fender big time.
2009: 1968RI Jazz Bass: built it myself, and then traded it against...
2010: 2006 Gibson SG Bass: ...my first Gibson Bass: very nice sounding instrument, albeit a bit fragile. Had a pinkish hue in the cherry which I did not like. Sold it in 2012.
2010: 2010 Fender "Classic '50" Precision Bass "Black": amazing bass, huge neck, huge sound. But I don't like maple fretboards, so I traded it against...
2011: 1976 Rickenbacker 4001 "Jetglo":... a Rickenbacker Bass. Smitten by being loaned a 4003, I needed to get one for myself. Sold it in 2012, when it became redundant because of...
2011: 1961/62 Fender Precision Bass "Olympic White": ...my number 1 bass, still own this today, and it will go to the funeral pire with me.
2012: 1964 Gibson EB2D "Sunburst: an amazing looking and sounding instrument, but heavy. Sold it to a friend of mine who wanted to buy it from day 1. Could have asked more for it. Still have the case for it though.
2013: 1962 Fender Partsmaster Jazz Bass:... my number 2 bass. Not original, but very good and woody sounding. Backup for the Precision Bass. Still own it today.
2013: 2013 Squier Bass VI "Olympic White": again, being a 1960's fan, I had to have one of those. Sold it because I didn't use it enough in 2015.
