Post pics of pros playing cheap guitars....

Post by shinealight » Fri Jun 06, 2014 3:32 am

I always find it interesting when I see pro players playing cheapish, off the shelf guitars that you or I could easily afford, when they are in a position to be playing far more expensive, and much 'nicer' custom or vintage gear. SO let's compile a list (I know there was a squier thread a few months ago, but let's expand out to other 'budget' brands, or at least 'entry-level' gigging gear like MIM fenders and the like. I've posted this in the non-offset section so we can include all kinds of guitars.

Post away!

Here's the QOTSA fellas playing Epiphones.

Brian Molko recently toured with Cyclones and Toronados, which I thought was pretty cool since he has vintage to die for;
one of them

A friend of mine has the Jack Cassady bass, its a really good instrument & at £500 plus new not exactly cheap.

Whats the price bracket for this 'cheap' guitars thread?

prolly because they are more reliable than the vintage guitars.

Didn't put up a price bracket....just anything 'cheaper' than you'd expect the pros to be gigging with. Gear that is conceivably well within the reach of us nobodies

The Jack Casady basses are great, I didn't realise they were that much but they're still an awesome bass for the money.

Mani from the Stone Roses has also been using them for a few years now:

they're all custom-painted of course, though

Its kinda tough to stick Epiphones in the category of cheap guitars you wouldn't expect to see someone gig with after seeing a pic like this. At least the semi/hollow body ones.

That's a totally different breed of epiphone that doesn't exist anymore though.

Epiphone certainly makes nice instruments now-aday- I've personally had more luck with them than with gibson- but in the 60's they were still made in the US and were more of a rebranded gibson (with a different model line) than a student brand; today's epiphone is spotty at best, and has a certain stigma about it.

I don't know about that ... I had a '61 RI Casino that played and sounded better than a Gibson Custom Shop 330, and my old MIK Sheraton II was only finally replaced when I found a vintage Gibson ES that sounded better ... in my opinion Epiphone hollow bodies (especially Sheratons/Casinos) are some of the best value electrics you can get these days. They're consistently good out of the box - and if you replace the usual weak point components (switch, pots and jack being the unholy trinity) you've got an extremely good guitar. Replace the pickups with something nice and you'll have an outstanding guitar.

I have gigged Epiphones (I gigged that Sheraton many times and it never let me down) and I'd happily gig one again.

Anyway - sorry, minor thread derail.

Isaiah Mitchell (Earthless) plays a JMJM.

Vigilante Carlstroem (The Hives) has played an Epi Crestwood on a few occasions, but I don't know if it's a 60's original or a reissue.
