Did you guys buy a guitar as a present to yourself when you hit 30?

For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

Did you guys buy a guitar as a present to yourself when you hit 30?

Post by zhivago » Mon Oct 23, 2006 6:02 am

I've been thinking about this...I'm gonna be 29 in January, and the big 3-0 is looming after that...I'm actualy looking forward to being in my 30s (and 40s) as I think men look their best when they are older.  :)

aaaanyways....all this got me thinking...maybe I should start putting money aside monthly for the next year and few months, so I can drop some serious cash on a vintage offset as a reminder of my 30th?

did you guys buy a guitar as a present to yourself, and what was it if you did?

I didn't get a guitar when I became 30, but I did use to buy a guitar every time a relationship went belly-up, as a "consolation prize". I used the term "relationship" very loosely in the early 90s, when I got pretty much all of my current guitars ;).

OHZ NOEZ!!!  NOT A MID-LIFE CRISIS!!!

hahah...I keed!  No, d00d...layaway is your bestest friend.  You aren't charged interest, and when "something" comes up, you can't dip into that cash...*and* it isn't quite as painful as handing over $4500 in cash all at once.

I did nothing special that I can recall for my 30th.  I've spent more on gear this last year then I had since I was maybe 25 (33 now) based solely on the fact that I making a lot more money freelancing on the side.

And I'm not so keen on getting older unfortunately.  My hockey game has gotten worse and I recently  pulled a muscle playing tennis.  I miss 22.  :(

i still have three and a half years left, so maybe i have the time to save enough money to treat myself to a nice refin gold guard JM, although prices will probably be really ridiculous by then, so who knows..?

I hear ya, John. I'm thinking it might be time to buy my first JM, and I'm thinking it's gonna be a vintage model. I know they're way overpriced over here, but hey, I'll only be 30 once.

I'd love a '68 with blocks and binding.  :-*

Thing is, do you have ANY idea how long it took me to persuade my wife to let me blow £1500 on my LP Custom?  :-\

hehe...I think I could put aside £3k ($5.6k - if the exchange rate holds up)) in a year and a bit

(provided work goes ok, and I do a couple of design projects that I'd usualy turn down)

...if I buy from the US, I should be able to score another '61 JM...maybe even an all-original sunburst (even though I'd love one in Black - more likely to be a refin)

it's all about that neck profile...so it has to be a '61...gold guards by that point will be out of the question anyway - too expensive :)

heheh...it's difficult I guess...maybe you could get a week-long divorce, buy the guitar, and then marry her again!!!

that way she gets a second honeymoon and you get a Jazzmaster?

perfect!! :D

When I was 30 I was married and not even allowed to play guitar, let alone buy a new one.

I'm divorced now and have a kick-ass collection.  Take it for what you will.
